Man claims Benz, Porsche stolen in same night

8:39 PM EST, January 18, 2009
Nassau police detectives are investigating a report by a man who said someone took his car keys from a valet parking station and stole his 2008 Mercedes-Benz while he ate dinner at a Manhasset restaurant Saturday night.

The victim told the police he had left a second set of keys, to a 2003 Porsche, inside the Mercedes while he ate dinner at Pearl East Restaurant, at 119 Northern Blvd.

When the victim called his wife at home she told him that the Porsche had also been stolen from their driveway, he told the police.

"Detectives believe that the same individuals stole both cars and that the suspects utilized the GPS in the Mercedes to locate the victim's address and the second auto," a Sunday police report said.

I've had experiences where they would leave the key on the back tire of cars. They also leave them near the front where if someone gets distracted, a set of keys could easily go missing. I hate valet parking (don't touch my car) to begin with but some places it is not an option otherwise. I can park my own car and walk it, thank you very much.

I have a 5 speed, so I never let a valet park my car. Most have no clue how to drive a manual transmission.

My dad had the side of his truck smashed in by a valet at a Pittsburgh hospital.

I usually only use valet parking with a rental when we're on vacation. 😀 Don't give a shit if one of Avis's cars gets stolen.

I've done Valet a few times here in teh city for extra cash.. 5-6 hour shifts, $150-$200 in tips.

We always have a locked cart where we put the keys and the cart itself is locked down.

I refuse to drive people's manuals and tell them to park it themselves. Too many different autos with touchy manuals. A busy valet night is not a time for me to try and figure out the quircks of their sticks.

Hospitals with valet service?

lol, learn to drive, noob =P

<--- valet'd for 3 years

Why do they assume the GPS was used to get the guy's address? I mean, the registration WITH THE HOME ADDRESS WRITTEN ON IT is required to be kept in the car. All they gotta do is open the glove compartment and look.

Several hospitals here in STL all do free valet.

As I read the paragraph I was trying to figure out how they got the guy's home address. Before I got to the GPS part I thought "registration... glove box".

They may not have gotten it that way though. With my car we got a valet key which will open the doors and start the car, but it won't unlock the glove box if you've locked it with one of the normal keys.

Or they could have gotten his address from the registration card that he probably keeps in the glove box. 😉

Oh I forgot about our hospital (North Shore Univ) that has valet... it's a circle where people drop off their family members but if you have to go in too (like help your pregnant wife up to the 3rd floor), you can leave your car... the valet merely moves it up to the end of the circle, turns it off until they can get to it... and leaves the keys in the car... WTF. There's tons of pedestrians that also walk by... there's no way that could be safe.

The only other option is to drop her off and make her wait until you park the car yourself about a 5 minute's-walk away. And no, of course the valet isn't free.

Depending on the city, that may or may not be useless without a GPS or Google Maps or some type of locating service.

I don't keep the registration with address in the glove box (which by the way can't be locked). It's always in my wallet since I'm the only driver. Anyway, if you push #1 of the 6 buttons, the nav will take you to my house - I actually use it a lot because it tells traffic for the way home too. I was thinking about changing that speed setting after reading this. Maybe I'll just point it to a house nearby and someone I don't like. 😉 Then the only other way to know where I actually live would be to have a friend in the DMV.

Gas station. Paper map.

That sucks, but my keyless car "key" has a little pullout key that I give the valet. That way I don't have to give him my home keys or keys to any other vehicles.

My Acura RSX had a valet key as well.

They will still need the GPS to find the house.

You know, there was a time when people found locations without a GPS 🙂
