I have been battling insomnia on some level the majority of my life. It ranges from 3-4 hours of decent sleep to none at all. Occasionally, I will get a full nights sleep but that is a rarity.

The last couple of months have been exceptionally bad, to the point where I took a couple of days off of work in an effort to at least try to get my sleeping cycles back in order.

I am tired of the constant fatigue and sleepiness I experience that seems to actually go away when I lay down to sleep at night.

I have already eliminated any alcohol from my diet, avoid large meals before sleep, and don't take in any caffeine or stimulants of any sort for at least 6 hours prior to sleeping. I also don't do and never have done any drugs. I get regular exercise in the form of weight training 5-6 days a week.

I refuse to take any sleeping pills as I wake up early in the morning and go hit the gym. A friend recommended valerian root extract as what I suffer from during insomnia is a brain that just wont shut down.

I was wondering if anyone had any positive/negative experiences using valerian root to help with insomnia.

you could try triazolam (prescription though) it wears off quickly and just helps you fall asleep, not stay asleep so you won't feel bad in the morning

i tried valerian root and it didn't help me

Valerian root is as weak as it comes. It's basically for normal people suffering from jetlag or something. You need a prescription IMO. I use Ativan. It's basically a low-grade tranquilizer.
