Because in countries where you do not have a majority of a religious entity in power you rarely if ever see these things. Whereas in countries which are almost Theocracies, the US, Saudi Arabia ect, you see extreme cases like these quite often as the upper middle class and higher class professionals either are part of the religious problem to a point, or will chose to comply with that issue for fear of falling out of favor with the people above them who might embrace that line of though.

i agree: but it should have never been considered an issue, by anyone, in the first place. How can any rational person think vagina or penis are offensive words, that children are unaware of them, and worse yet, be taught to shy away from them? BS.

When I had health class many many years ago in HS not only did we learn about vaginas but also about penises. We even learned the result of both frolicking together. What is wrong with people these days?

Sex topics are still considered taboo and because of that, many develop an innate fear of pleasure. So, talking about the issues becomes "sinful", guilt is created and all kinds of internal imbalances form. None of this is natural at all and it's antithetical to a state of inner harmony.

I'm not saying sexual repression is the cause of all ill. It just seems silly to me we spend so much time and energy limiting, controlling and flagging sex stuff as bad when the truth is sex is very important to a satisfying, happy adult life.

Pretty sure I heard "vagina" and "penis" from teachers in elementary school and for sure by 7th grade health class. I knew what a "wee wee" was much earlier. Somewhere in between I noticed girls had "wa was" and they seemed pretty interesting to me. Now, I see all of those terms many times a day as spam in my inbox. I need better anti-spam software.

Exactly! Just like if they ever pass the constitutional ban on gay marriage. What happened last time a constitutional amendment prevented rights? We got organized crime. So a gay marriage amendment will cause gay organized crime. Imagine the difference in meaning of "say hello to my little friend" in that case!

And for anyone who hasn't seen a production of The Vagina Monologues, I recommend it. I saw it last year for V-Day and I thought it was amazing. I really didn't expect to like it going in, but went to see it because a friend was in it.

And seriously, it's a freaking body part. Would you suspend them for saying arm, or leg, or eyeball? No, then you shouldn't suspend them for vagina. Instead in protest I'd get up there and yell out the word poontang, then cooch, then pussy, then f*ck hole, you get the idea.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. Those students should definitely have been punished - perhaps suspension was a little harsh, but I've known people expelled for little more.

I couldn't care less about the vagina issue. However, all 3 of them showed clear, willful disobedience. Punishment for that would be entirely appropriate.

I have to confess that I have some sympathy with the school on this matter. The event was billed as suitable for young children. While no one reasonably expects children to be totally oblivious to the word vagina and its meaning, it is perhaps inappropriate for a family event.

I'd certainly not want a school to prohibit the performance of such works - but it would only be courteous to perform them in the appropriate setting. When I was at high school, we once performed Peter Shaeffer's Equus as the school play - a controversial choice, yes - but the people who came knew what to expect.
 
I've always thought it amusing how the Americans ( when it comes to movies ) shy away from the natural course of sex, but dont mind violence and the British are the opposite!

I find it interesting that half of the time our Liberal Dominated Educational System is forcing people to have inappropriate and offensive things read to them, but the other half of the time the Liberal Dominated Educational System is censoring people.

Which one is it? It couldn't possibly be that some people on here put "liberal" in front of whatever it is that they don't like.... could it?

Of course "liberal" isn't inhereintly bad nor is "conservative" but both sides want the other word to be seen in a negative or derogatory way. It's rather sad this is so extreme to some people that those words actually equate to vulgarity. I personally would not want to be snap conditioned like that.

I find it's best to mentally strip off such words. "Far Right Wacko Fundamentalist Agenda" becomes "Agenda"; "Liberal Dominated Educational System" becomes "Educational System". Sometimes less is more.
