Vacuum recommendation

Our cheap vacuum just died so we're in the market of buying another one. We live in a 2 story house so the vacuum should be able to clean the stairs. Any personal recommendations?

I thought he was only trying to joke around too and meant the stupid Kirby character in Nintendo games, but there's actually a Kirby vacuum brand.

So how good are vacuums that are under $100?

Kirbys are over priced, but they are indeed the very best and will literally last forever because parts are available for even the oldest model.

I bought a reconditioned Generation 4 and am extremely please with it.

Oh my God...I found a G4 for $500. I think "overpriced" is a bit of an understatement.

What are the pros and cons of each:

1) upright
2) bagless
3) under $100 (is it actually good?)
4) whatever else that determines a good vacuum

As for the cleansiness of the house, there're no more little kids bringing mud into the house, rarely a spill, but there are some food crumbs when I eat Cheetos. And oh yeah, we're Asians so we take off our shoes in the house so no dirty shoes either. Almost forgot..most importantly, I have allergies and a vacuum with a good filter is essential. So what vacuum should be the best in my case?

Oh come on, don't tell me you computer geeks know how to record your voice with the Billy Bass but don't know what makes a good vacuum.

*don't know how to do either*

Bought a Ricar 20 years ago, based on the Panasonic "by-pass" design. It was light and fairly quiet. It died only 2 years ago, though I had to tweak it here and there over the years. I wouldn't buy a Kirby for the noise factor alone, let alone the initial cost and the fact that it sucks debris straight through the impeller! My mom had two Kirbys suck up something like a 1/4" nut or bolt from the floor, which broke impeller fins, knocking it off balance and ruining them. We got them cheap, since my dad sold them for a while, but they were still expensive losses. The new by-pass system is the way to go.

Ristenbatt Vacuum's is a great place to get educated about vacuums. Personally, I bought a Sharp EC_T5970 from DynaDirect.com for $116.00 + $9.00 shipping back in January last year. I sincerely doubt you'll find a better bang for the buck, locally or online, but you're welcome to try! ;)

Ornery, that Sharp seems really nice. What's the closest bagless equivalent? And does it have good filters (for my allergies)?

I was eyeing this Eureka and I remember one or two reviewers saying Eureka has questionable quality, not to mention dakata also warning me against a Eureka. But it seems to be what I'm looking for. How long have you used your Eureka, pandapanda? And how's the quality of those vacuums in general?

Beats me. The bags are too cheap to worry about it. Besides, I just unroll the bottom of the bags, dump them out, staple them shut and reuse them a few times. My old Ricar had a perminant bag that you could unzip and dump that way.

The EC-TU2007 is gonna cost 50% more initially and it has a "HEPA-type filtration system". The EC-12SXT5's "Triple Filter System traps over 99% of dust and dirt as small as 1 micron", whatever the hell that means! :D

I would check out your local Sears and CostCo, Sears has a nice selection of vacuums at reasonable prices.

The wife and I are going to buy a Kenmore upright with HEPA filter for about $119 from Sears, comes with an extra long hose, all the attachments, works great on carpet/floor/furniture.

Another vote for Costco - You can return anything, even years after use.

I've heard of people returning beds and computers after years with no receipt.

They all suck;)

But seriously, Kirby is built really well, but I don't think it's worth the price. We have q Hoover right now. It's okay, I guess.

I went to Best Buy since it was the most convienant. There selection of vacuums were pretty limited and we ended up buying the Dirt Devil MVP M086325. Haven't tried it out yet but ratings seem to be good. Thanks for the help everyone.

We have had our Eureka about 3 years. We paid a lot more than $119 for it, but it's the same one I had the link to. So far, no real problems. We have managed to clog up the hose a time or two, but when you have 3 kids things that vacuums were never meant to eat get eaten. We have only had to replace the HEPA filter once and the belt once.

I have a Eureka upright as well. It's been fine, but it seems kinda cheaply made compared to an old Kirby I used to use. Of course, I hated that Kirby. The thing was all metal which made it quite heavy. The Eureka hasn't given me any problems in about 5 years, so I can't complain about it. One thing to really watch out for though is to make sure you get a really, really long power cord and possibly a long hose as well. My cord was fine for the apartment I bought it for, but not as good for the house.

Stairs are a mixed bag. If you have a really long hose or hose attachments, it really doesn't matter whether you get upright or canister. I used to own a canister and hated lugging it along doing the stairs, but now I'm finding it was much, much easier than using the upright with a short hose.

I haven't used a bagless, but I can't see the benefit. So I vacuum stuff into a canister, then when I empty the canister all the dust flys everywhere? Doesn't sound good to me.

I was at Meier & Frank today and they had several vacuum cleaners on sale.

I saw several Hoover vacuums at prices of $59, $69, $79, $99 and more.
