Vacation in NY City

1. I've heard bad things about the traffic. Does it matter if we stay close by or a little far away? Should be take public transport either way? I'm wondering if I should rent a car at all.

2. Any suggestions for good inexpensive motels that you stayed at?

Thanks,
N.

1) Traffic indeed sucks. If youare staying in the city and plan to do your sightseeing in the city, you should certainly take public transportation. Besides saving you traffic time, it will save you time and money for parking.

2) No. You may be able to find a deal, but hotels in the city are generally not cheap.

Don't bother renting a car. The traffic and hassle of parking will ruin your trip.
Try to stick to public transportation as a subway/bus ride for $2 will get you anywhere. If you're traveling with a bunch of people, splitting a cab wouldn't be that bad either.

Motels I can't help you out on, sorry.

Try using Priceline.com -- my mom and sister stayed at a 4-Star hotel for $90/night in Noew York City, in a Suite no less. It had marble floors, granite counter tops ... the whole nine yards. 23

Wow, thats cool. So if I stay in the city, do I need to rent a car at all? Or is public transport enough for wherever I need to get to? And also is it better to not take a car to manhattan due to traffic.

Do not rent a car. You can get anywhere you need to using taxis and/or public transportation.

First, there's no such thing as inexpensive motels here. 🙂 All the hotels are way too expensive, but my friend did mention a hotel cheaper than the others called Carter Hotel right in Times Square. Look it up, I think it's only 90 or 100 per night but I'm not sure of the quality of the hotel.

If you're staying in Manhattan, I'd recommend not renting a car and using public transportation. You can go anywhere you want and it's only $2 per ride (or $7 all day unlimited).

Yea, you definitely don't need a car. A few taxi rides from and to the airport, and then a lot of subway rides and walking around. 29

ok another question is crime/mugging etc. How safe is it (city/subway) at night? I want to see times square by night.

As long as you don't go too far north in Manhattan after dark you should be fine.

where will you be in times square and exactly what time? I work in times square so i'll try not to mug you if you tell me the truth. 🙂

It's actually a lot safer than what people tend to think. TS is full of tourists so you're pretty safe here as long as you keep your money in a secure place.

Depending on your budget, you can stay at a hostel. I've stayed at one a couple of times before. You do need to share a room with other people, but they're typically very nice and travelers as well. $25/night if you don't mind the fact the lack of privacy. If you're going with other people, then maybe you'd like to have more of your own space.

Oops, I just saw the 'we'. So I guess hostel might not be the best option for you.

Like others have said, don't rent a car if you're planning to stay mostly in Manhattan. The subways and buses will get you everywhere you need to go (Check http://www.mta.info for maps and service changes), but READ THE SIGNS on the subway. You don't know how many times I've seen tourists and non-tourists alike ride the downtown train into Brooklyn when they intended to go uptown to Times Square. It's probably a good idea to take a look at the maps (there's a PDF on that website or get them free at any subway station) to figure out where you want to go before you actually head out. For the most part, Brooklyn, Queens and Bronx are accessible using public transportation as well, but Staten Island, NJ, etc. may require a car.

Subway and buses are $2/ride with free transfers between the two. If you'll be taking the subways a lot everyday, the unlimited ride metrocards might make sense. The $10 metrocards actually have $12 on it (1 free ride).

In my opinion, NYC is actually very safe at night along the popular tourist areas (beware of pickpockets though). But even I would avoid travelling into the Bronx, Harlem, Lower East Side and lesser known areas in Queens and Brooklyn at night.

things to see will be
midtown:
times square
empire state building
grand central
central park

Downtown:
brooklyn bridge
wall street
WTC
liberty statue (if you dont like to stand in the queue or pay for it, take the staten island ferry, it passes close to the statue & its free)
soho
china town

& if you like museums theres a whole street of museums near central park
all the above may take atleast 3days.
Buy the day's pass for subway or there might be a 3-day pass but i am not sure.
Also the open top double decker bus charges $40 i think & they take you around manhatten & you can overboard or board at any place along the route

thanks guys for all the replies. i wasn't planning on going to staten island. is there anything to see there?

Seriously! Try Priceline, you can get unbelievable rates. On another recent trip, a 4-star hotel was cheaper than a Motel 6! 52

safeway, are you talking about "quote your own price"? The normal search was just like any other site.
