I am planning on taking a short vacation with my wife and a friend of ours (she is like a mother to me.)

The location needs to be around 500 miles or less from Memphis.

We have several choices but I am interested in your opinion as many of you have visited these places.

Chicago
New Orleans
Dallas
Atlanta

New Orleans for the seafood and party atmosphere. Or is seafood still tainted with oil? Chicago seems fun, but would probably be boring after a while. Dallas is full of hot air and conservatives, and Atlanta sounds dangerous.

Cruise? Nothing ever goes wrong on those...

I hear cruises are going pretty cheap right now...

Joking aside, we don't really have time for a cruise right now and need to be easily able to get home since my wife's grandmother has been ill.

I can't speak to New Orleans since I haven't been there but of the others Chicago hands down. More to do, better food, better climate, not in Texas.

Other ideas:
West Memphis in July
Cave in Rock, IL
Smoky Mts
Ozarks (not at pretty as the Smoky Mts but still nice)
Birmingham, AL (not in Summer)

Went to Chicago and loved it..
Just get the day pass for the red tourist bus, you can hop on and hop off at any point of interest

West Memphis in July?

Get a cabin in Gatlinburg (Smokey Mountains).
Get a condo in Destin FL.
Get a cruise leaving from Port Canaveral (perhaps a bit more than 500 miles).

New Orleans by a long shot. Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas all feel like any other big city.
New Orleans feels like a different country. If you like to eat, shop, party, see attractions, etc... New Orleans is the place to go.

Of those, I'd recommend Nawlins. I like Chicago a lot but not in the winter. I live in Georgia and Atlanta is pretty boring. Dallas is the only one of those I haven't spent any real time in.
