i ordered mine, this was a great deal, i'll be colo'ing it at my workplace for free. :)

the case, mobo, ram, processors, and disk exceed 800 bucks (i think), so if needed a rackmount, you should've jumped on it.

i say should've because it looks like the deal was taken down. i can get to the quickship info page, but no order button. and, my account says 'no longer available'. whats is that? hope i still get mine.

they haven't charged my credit card yet, but i really want the server.

please post if you ordered one too.

For those of you interested in the 1U rack mount design, you should check out the Netfinity 4000R. IMHO is it a better unit that the VA Linux boxes and you know that IBM will be around to support them. IBM has been pumping these into the reseller market clearance prices for about six months now. We purchased 6 of the Pentium III 750Mhz model (dual capable) for $699 each off of egghead.com clearance. The specs for the 4000r are almost identical to the VA Linux box listed in this thread.

Unless it was a special deal the only ibm servers even close now on egghead clearance are single 750s, 9.1 gig hd, 256 meg of ram for 899, seems you got quite lucky.

VALinux changed the price throughout the weekend. I was able to order two systems on Friday, I went back to check on Saturday and Sunday and they were $400 more for identical config (I even printed them out and compared them side by side).

The 850Mhz VA1000 system is still a very good deal if you want a lot of RAM. You can get 2GB of RAM and 1 30GB hard drive (add the second yourself) for under $1500. That is a very hot deal, because 2GB of ECC RAM alone (4 * 512MB modules). Of course, if you don't need a 2GB system... not that hot.

Has anyone gotten any information on shipping? I presume they have a huge backlog.

OK, you people are trying to configure your systems (those who said they only 850's and think that the 750's are sold out or see the 'system' as being more expensive). The deal that they're talking about is found HERE. If you use the other link you need to click on "Quickships".

Daniel. The Egghead site and offerings change hourly. There are dozens of clearance sales for the 4000R posted throughout the month where the price is under $800.00 for a single Pentium III 600 or 750.00. If you don't mind auctions, you can also purchase the the 4000R (single and dual configs from uBid. They have been offering a constant stream (a least 3-4 auctions a day) of 4000Rs for about 3 months now. We paid $699.95ea for 6 of the units in April + $6.95 UPS Ground S&H for all six units!.

If you want to buy the VA Linux box, the 1000 Quickship that was referenced in the original post in this thread is sold ou. Here is the correct link to the unit if you want to see the unit that the post was referring - VA Linux 1000 Quickship

If you stll want a good deal on a VA Linux 1000, configure the unit that you want and go through the procedures to add your configured unit to your cart. You will see the discount when you actually add the configuration to your cart. In addition, you can call VA Linux sales and tell them that you are interested in the 1000 Quickship and since it is no longer available, they will offer you an additional discount on your configured price. Here is an example system that they quoted us...

Server
2 x 850MHz Pentium III
2 x 512MB RAM
1 x 30GB IDE Drive (7200rpm)
1 x 1000 Console Adapter
1 x Recommended Server Partition
1 x 1000 User's Guide
1 x VA 6.2.4 Software Accessory Kit
1 x Mount Kit, Slide Rail, 1U

software: Red Hat 6.2 with VA Linux Enhancements
$1022.00 - 8% ~$950.00.

If you are really interested, you may be able to get a better discount than we were offered. You will just have to try.

GetRight,

That's a smoking deal.... wow... Netfinity 4000R for that price. We have a couple at work and they totally rock (bad thing is that they don't have HD bays in the front). Wow.. hmm...... VA or IBM.... VA = cool, but they won't be making any more.. IBM = cost is like a BMW but I'm getting it for Honda prices...

my order was cancelled. :( they said they didn't have inventory or something, which is totally unbelievable. the entire premise of the quickship line is that the boxes are already put together, ready to be shipped. is it that difficult to count the number of boxes you have, and then only sell that many?

they 'suggested' an alternate configuration, but needless to say, it was piss-poor. cpus bumped to 850s, some other components tweaked (i think) and the price bumped up to $1500!

this is really disappointing, an i sent an email back to the csr asking for an explaination of some sort.

anybody get their server?

Same story here. Called yesterday to order 4 of them to replace some older Micron servers, and they said they were all sold out as of last week. Tried to sell us the same thing as a build up for like $600 more.
