V6 raw power

I was recently discussing this with a friend: he claims that the RPM limiter/speed governor in his V6 mustang is the only reason he cant get his car up to speeds 140+ (his argument is that once he has full power and control, and lack of power up against a V8 is made up for in weight). I think that there's no way that any V6 can push hard enough to break 120 mph.... and even for that speed, you'd probably need two minutes to do it. Not to mention, a V6 mustang's maximum horsepower is fairly low for the size of the engine. I was wondering if anyone had any insight into what a V6 really can be capable of.

any V6 you know of.... of course they dont all compare directly, but ive never heard of one that had torque and power comparable to a nice big V8
 
I dunno, never pushed mine hard enough to be able to give insight into that... I'd like mine to last beyond 150k miles if possible...
 
120mph is easy on a V6, however i dont recommend it unless your on a race track.

My I4 on my focus can do over 110, the limiter kicks in at 115.. I have the 110hp model.. I can get it to 100 no problems if i need to, but i have never hit it for legal reasons.

That right there means a LOT at high speeds

Exactly. To achieve high speed, the engine needs enough horsepower to overcome drag, and the gearing has to be just right. Drag is the most significant factor at those speeds.

My 3.0 V6 (Eclipse GT) does it pretty easily. I've hit a little over 140mph a few times.
 
It's not like you can lump all V6's together..

It's certainly possible for a well-designed V6 to be more powerful than a mediocre V8.

Not true. My friend's 92 Maxima SE has gone up to 140MPH on da interstate.
 
People have gone about 135 on my 175hp Sentra w/ a 4 banger..so a 6 cyl can def do it. For a V6 example..a 350Z can def do it.

It's cuz the Mustang V6 is a piece of junk. That car gets beat by 4 bangers all the time
 
My 108hp Scion xB can do over 100, and it's a 4cly (110 is what it is governed at IIRC).

Time for you to STFU about things you don't know.
 
well the inline-6 on my E46 BMW M3 produces 343hp stock with a top speed of 170mph+, so your arguement doesn't hold water.
 
Gearing and aerodynamics are just as important as raw power. You need the engine to be at its peak power when the car's moving at that speed (about 4500 rpm for a mustang V6, I believe). The drag co-efficient also makes a big difference.

I've been in a 4-cylinder turbo diesel doing 140MPH, I see no reason a V6 couldn't do it
