v5 replacement card..

ok... i've been trying driver after driver to get my v5 to work under Win Xp with little success... soooooo what card would give me the same performance as a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP i know there is probably a FAQ out there and what not but pardon my ignorance in asking as i have been reading FAQ's and forums all day.. and just want ya'lls opinion... thanks everyone

Eloric

same performance or better ... but cost is the biggest issue for me... i need it done as cheeply as possible if i have to go with a new card...

Well the Voodoo5 is pretty out of date... A good cheap card upgrade for the V5 would probably be the GeForce II MX400. Or if you have a little more money, maybe a Radeon 7500 or GeForce Ti200

What problems are you having? My V5 works great under XP. Just had to change drivers to get Open GL to work in some games.

well as of now the only game i have got to work is Diablo 2 in D3D ... i get a BSOD messege that results in having to restart the pc... tried several different driver versions to get it to work. going to try running RTCW in Open GL soon as i can... and see what happens with that

Heh, I remember when those cards cost upwards of $600, no wonder they never went anywhere and 3dfx folded.😱

<< A good cheap card upgrade for the V5 would probably be the GeForce II MX400. >>

That would be a downgrade in some peoples' opinions. If you absolutely have to replace the V5, and want to do it cheaply, I'd try one of the cheap Radeon LE's and O/C it.

trust me any new card out side of 3dfx is a down grade to me 🙁 and the last thin i want to do is lose the V5 but right now the ony thing i've managed to get working is Diablo II in D3D Open GL and GLide games both result in BSOD talking bout a driver file getting caught in a infinite loop during memory dump... gota gew more ideas i will try before giving up on her..and very willing to get ideas from anyone out there that has any thoughts on the matter

The V5 is pretty kick butt on the UT engine. You'd have to go for Gf3/Ti-200 to equal its performance in that game. The Gf2/Ti-200, nor any neutered form of it (aka MX400), is just not going to cut it. The Radeon 8500 would give you the FSAAx2 performance if that sort of thing is your fancy.

Edit: Some of you guys are recommending cards that don't have real great driver support for WinXP. I only mentioned the 8500 because its drivers will get it to the V5 level of performance.

The only real choice is the GeForce3 Ti200.

The Radeon is a downgrade plain and simple.

<< trust me any new card out side of 3dfx is a down grade to me >>

Sorry dont mean to offend you but what exactly are you smoking? You say you can only get one game to work and everything else is a downgrade???????

Heck a TNT 1 would be an upgrade considering it would actually work in all the games you want it to.

Some people just confuse me 😕

thanks sandorski your exactly right.. when the drivers work the V5 is great i love it... and also i was talking bout user friendlyness of the 3dfx enitre line of cards... i don't know personally a single person that had problem getting one in and working when 3dfx was around.... as for the others well one roomate tried 3 Gforce 2's with no luck the other is trying his second G2 or 3 not sure which.. .each time the companies tech support is like the card is dead we will replace it... i just love 3dfx... great products great support... d@mned Invidia... no offense to any Invidia fans of course 🙂

thanks paul i'll give those drivers a shot when i get in tonight and have time to test them...

as for a price budget lets say around 100.00 unless i limp it along till tax return time hehe then well yea top of the line out then 🙂

I don't really understand Eloric.
Firstly, people do get the V5 running under XP.
Secondly, who says you have to use XP for everything anyway? What is wrong with a dual boot. If you want to play a particular game, reboot and within a minute you can be in windows 9x. In the old days people had to wait for games to load by compact cassette. Could take from 5 minutes to half an hour.
If you want FSAA I believe the GF3 does it most efficiently now.

If I were to replace my Voodoo5 at this point in time, I'd get a Radeon 8500. The reason is the quality of it's FSAA, though the GeForce 3 is faster in FSAA, the picture quality is poor.

Going from a V5 to any other card is a downgrade in natural Glide games. In some classics, such as NFS:HS, Glide kicks all over D3D, so is the Unreal series. I think he meant that because Diablo2 counts as one of those games that work brilliantly in Glide, yes of course, this is the case that Glide/V5 drivers work. Again, no, a TNT1 will not be an upgrade since the V5 already works in D3D mode according to him.

Despite your bad experiences with Nvidia products, I still recommend a Gainward Geforce2 Ti/500 XP 64MB. It sells for around $120 at newegg. It has Golden Sample 4ns RAM so it can be overclocked like crazy. Good luck.

thanks for all the insight 🙂 so far no luck.. quickly running out of ideas... as for the duel boot sytem i am between games and work to much to do that.. so i would go strait 98 first.. which i dont wanna do cause of general stability issues when compared to XP... as for a replacement i have been looking at a G3 Ti200 or 500 depnding on how much cash i get for xmas and if i could sell my old V5 for 70.00 or so... which would be a great loss but would offset the cost of the new card considerably... thats bout it... open to new ideas no matter how crazy except for one last thought... outside of the Video card is there anything that could be causing the problem???

MadRat... i am using third part drivers... so far i've tried every version on Voodoo files.... i might give 2k drivers a shot tomorrow... though i dont think they will work from what i have read

Eloric

Just a suggestion, but try these two things:

1) Remove the soundcard and try to run your games
2) Disconnect any extra devices hooked up to the powersupply

Do each one separately. The (1) test will prove its not a conflict on the PCI bus with the soundcard. For that matter it could even be a bad NIC or modem. Any device that bus masters will potentially have a conflict with a V5. The (2) test will prove that your powersupply is able to handle the load more or less. I've had bad powersupplies give me all sorts of problems that first appeared to be something else.

hey... guess what guys... wickedGL drives make Q3 stable and now if i can them for other games .... i may have something going... pretty much seems to nail down the drive issue bit... if worse comes to worse i'll just have to get the full version of Q3 instead of playing UT hehe...
