I have a funny feeling that that's what many will be saying about the highly touted NV20 when it becomes available. I'm optimistic, but on the other hand I fallen victim to hype before.

Despite the so called "leaked specs" I'm not expecting more than a 10-15% improvement over the Ultra. And for $500, there's no way an extra 9 fps in Quake3 is worth it.

We'll see what happens.

the performance of those benchmarks @ voodooextreme was WAYYYYYYYYYYY off

they're a good 10-20 fps slow in just about all the "important" stuff

just plain pitiful

"I wasn´t very impressed by it, it´s basically at GTSU speeds, just that it needs 4 CPU´s instead of one.

I always hate this comparison. It is nothing but pure ignorance.

That is just like saying the Honda S2000 with a I-4 that does 0-60 in 5.5s is better than a LT-1 Trans AM with a V8 that does 0-60 in 5.5s. Is either better? No. They both cost the same and have around the same gas mileage so what does it matter? "

Your analogy is incorrect because the v5 6k does require I substantial amount more electricity (gas mileage), and throws alot more heat into your system.

I know it doesn´t really matter how the job gets done, but I sort of expected more from the 4 CPU monster. And besides, they don´t have the same "gas mileage", the V56K needed an external PS only for the card.

Actually it doesn't need a external PS. They made it with an external powersupply to allow for the installation in to a broader range of systems. There are AGP specs that provide for 50% more power than the V5 6000 needs. IF something gets the job done, I don't care.

AGP spec is 18 to 20watts. AGP50 allows for a 50watts provided through the bus. The power brick for the v5 6k is/was 100watts.

I emailed the author of the article and asked him if texture compression was enabled or disabled

here is his response:

"Compression was set to 0 in the q3aconfig.cfg file. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to run benchmarks with compression enabled."

well, there you go! Huge difference!!!!!

this explains EVERYTHING.

BUMP

it seems some people are still looking at the v5-6000 "preview" and forgetting that

TEXTURE COMPRESSION WAS DISABLED
