"Some good news for you value oriented gamers out there. The V4 4500AGP hit store shelves today. At least the local CompUSA had them on the shelves. With a $149 price tag we are surely going to get some comparison numbers with the V4 and our Hercules Prophet MX. Look for those numbers once Ben returns in the next couple weeks. I can't for the life of me find any 4500AGP reviews so if you got one send it my way. Would like to see some numbers."

$150? That's not good for 3dfx....I have a fealing that the V4 is gonna be beaten by the MX performance-wise....so I think that price is a bit high.

It is out, and it's the same price as the MX. Retail prices are the same. Street prices may vary though. In fact one online company already has the 4500 for under $120. Performance should be very good.

<< Performance should be very good >>

Yeah, compared to what, a V3 3000?

The V4 is half a V5, that's it. Its half the performance too.

It's not half the performance Burntkooshie. I've tested my V5 in single chip
mode and found very little difference at 1024*768 and below. If you're happy
at those resolutions, you'll like the V4.

I know I will, I need 3 more video cards and the V4 looks like it. 🙂

It has the same theoretical fill rate as a V3-3500 (333-366 mtexels) but is supposed to perform about 33% faster than a V3-3500. $150 sounds good for a card like that. I'll have to wait and see numbers though.

Just read Anands Voodoo4 & Voodoo5 review. Voodoo4 performs simmilar to TNT2 Ultra, it even has the same feture set as the TNT2 Ultra. Why buy it when you can buy a card for the same money but with alot more fetures and alot faster.

Anand did not review a 4500, just a 5500 in single chip mode which may or may not be accurate, Most likely not accurate.

I would agree that early results would seem to imply that the GF 2 MX will probably be faster and a little cheaper than the Voodoo 4, but some of us like McGallik, have had good experiences with 3dfx products and are hoping that the extra time tha 3dfx took before releasing the V4 will result in some performance enhancing features. As far as comments like "it is half the performance of the Voodoo 5 5500" are simply inaccurate. The only question in my mind is cost vs benefit. I have been well pleased with my Voodoo 3 3000 PCI cards and have yet to find a game my 3 sons can't play reasonably well. I am hoping the street price of the Voodoo 4 drops to compete with the GF 2 MX. While the benchmarks of the Geforce 2 MX are very attractive, I still lean toward the reliability/compatibility of 3dfx products. So please don't call me stupid, actually I am reasonably intelligent. I just have a different set of priorities than some of you Nvidia fans.

A V4 is about the same speed as a TNT Ultra. The problem is that the TNT2 Ultra is 1-2 years old while the V4 has only just come out. Plus the V4 doesn't have a true AGP implementation while the Ultra does.

So we have: a new board which is on par with an old board and doesn't have as many features. Hmmm... doesn't look good for 3dfx.

And let's not forget the GF2 MX which is cheaper than $150 and will demolish a V4, plus it will have a lot more features (T&L, GPU, tri-linear mip-mapping, true AGP, rolling bump mapping).

nVidia should just make a TNT2 card in 0.18 micron process and sell it for $50-80, then you would get about the same stuff that comes with the Voodoo4 4500 for alot less money

It amazes me how the same people show up time and time again to bash 3dfx.

The V4 should sell reasonably well. voodoo has a decent brand name at retail, there are many users who have had good experiences with Voodoo cards in the past. MX is not cheaper, the retail cards from the cardmakers that the big retail stores will carry are all $150 (not the $120 that Anand repeated over and over again in his preview/review). The V4 box design looks very nice and goes well to make a "wall of Voodoo" (take a step back at Best Buy or CompUSA and see the effect). The V4 scores very well in UT-engine games and those are outselling Quake3. I am also interested in seeing just how ell the GF T&L unit works with DX8.

Personally, I'm leaning more towards an MX if I were shopping for a card in that price range (I'm not and I'm very, very happy with my V5 5500). I bet the buyers that frequent these forums are very different than the average retail buyer, though.
