For you trivia lovers:

Wisconsin used to build flat head air cooled V-4's for utility and consruction equipment. We had one on a self powered (but not self propelled farm combine).

 
They make V4 outboard engines too. It's only to save space. I would think you'd lose overall horsepower in a V4 compared to an inline 4 just because there aren't enough cylinder's to take advantage of the design.
