V3 or GF2MX???

Rifter

Lifer
Well i could get a GF2MX but i would really like glide support, mainly i play UT Unreal, HL, Rainbow 6 and RS, and trying to play FFVII. My system is a 366@550. What should i get, is glide worth it?

I have a v3 3000 and its pretty good, but games are not as fast as I want since its really a bottle-neck on my Thunderbird 1000. I would recommend the MX since its not too much more money, and its way faster. It runs UT better than the V3 anyway which I seen at a small LAN party I was at yesterday.

but like i soid i would like glide support, and i am thinking maybe my CPU would be the bottleneck with a MX.

oh and another thing, i am in canada, we seem to just be getting the GF2MX here, and the cheapest i have seen them is right around 200$ for the Hercules which is what i would get, and i can get a V3-2000 for 100$ and a 3000 for 130$ so it would be 50% cheaper for a v3-2000 and 30-40% cheaper for a V3-3000.

oh and i guess i should ask, how much better is a V3 than a TNT 1? any benchmarks anywhere i could look at?

BTW someone here said the GF2MX would be just as good as a V3 in glide? i didnt know the Nvidia cards supported glide? and i dont mean with a glide wrap as i know people that tried them and say they suck.

No, nvidea cards do not support glide, but games like UT have support for things such as Direct 3d. When Buddha Bart said they were just as good he meant that that MX in Direct 3D would be just as good as the Voodoo 3 in glide.

There is no question here at all. The MX smokes the V3 in all ways, but its more expensive. My friend was using his 366 @ 550 this past weekend with and MX and he was getting much better frames rates than I was with my Thunderbird 1000 and V3 3000.

Get the MX.

Glide is nearing its death so buying a new card now just for glide games is like buying a record player just because you found some old records in your parents collection.

Not that I´m right, its just my opinion, everyone has their own.

Czar, you really think glide is going to die?

I don't really care myself, but it is a good language and runs excellent. And with 3dfx continuing to release new cards, do you really think its toast?

Only if you play Glide games exclusively. D3D performance on V3 boards isn't too shabby. It depends on the game.

Glide was able to make a name for itself back in the days (circa 1996/1997).

If one wanted to play 3D games, it was either a combination 2D/3D board or a Matrox Millenium I/Millenium G200 board and Voodoo/Voodoo2 board combo.

I think the only gaming franchise that will be using the Unreal Engine in the future (other than Unreal/UT) will be Duke Nukem Forever. I could be mistaken DTTF that I haven't done my homework on the subject.

Hopefully, DN4Ever's D3D will be decent.

Also, check the Forum's search engine for threads re: FF7 and the GF/GF2MX/GF2 boards. Some people have been having problems (even w/the TNT patch).

this one's a no brainer.

GeForce II MX

For the same price as a voodoo 3, you get twice the ram, faster, and incoporated all the bells 'N whistles of the GeForce

"The MX smokes the V3 in all ways, but its more expensive."

yeah, if the MX were as expensive as the V3 is right now, I'd want to get it ASAP, but because of that, it's a no go. nuts to you nVidia.

however, even though you're looking for Glide compatability, it's kind of rare to find games with no other API besides glide, so unless you do have one of those games, go with the MX (unless the price is too high for you. $200+ for that? ARE YOU NUTS!?

get the voodoo 3 and save the 60 $ for ur next cpu upgrade
u dont need the mx the voodoo3 is fine man get it

I own a V3 2000 oc'd to 175. It is a great card. It runs Glide games great! It has been fantastic and cheep. It has the greatest 16Bit ++ picture quality ever seen.

Get the GeForce MX.

"I thought Glide went open source, wouldn't there be more support for Glide along the road?"

well theoretically, games and video cards COULD support it, but neither has really happened. first off, Glide IS NOT as good as the 2 major current API's in terms of features. however there are many games that run especially well in Glide, which is why some video card manufacturers may want to make a Glide wrapper. however the lazy bastards that they are, they haven't, and therefor have forced some people to get 3dfx cards when they might NOT be the best choice otherwise..

I think ill egt the V3 for the simple reason that its half the price, i dunno about prices in the US but in canada where i live right now the cheapest i can find a MX is just over 200$ tax in, and i can get a V3 for just over 100$ tax in, so i figure ill save the extra 100 for something later on, maybe a celeron 533@800 or something 🙂
