Uniden, Uniden, VTech, GE, Panasonic for top five multiple handsets. Panasonic is the most expensive at $75.

Everytime I followed CR's advice I've gotten screwed in the long run.

Our V-tech has worked great for the last 2 years. Panasonic is great but really expensive. The V-tech was only $10 and the cheapest Panasonic was $80.

There's always an exception. I do trust their 'one time' product reviews though. And I like to read the product reviews of real people, not CR's.

I've generally had good advice from them regarding home-type stuff. If nothing else they're useful for finding what's out there and for what price. But for cameras, cars, computers, and things like that, it seems you're better off looking elsewhere.

What I like about V-tech is that I only pay about 7 dollars for them. When they crap out, I toss them without regrets.

That's because it was manufactured by Uniden. For the past 10+ years Uniden has made all of the phones, CB radios, scanners, and 2-way radio sets that Radioshack has carried.

That being said, Panasonic is simply amazing as far as quality goes. I had a set of their expandable phones, dropped those mothers like every day for 3 years, scratched all to hell and dinged up, still worked perfectly. I'm now using a 5.8ghz expandable set of Radioshack phones, I get 4+ hours easy off the battery charge (Ni-mh), speakerphone built-in, everything. Great phones, over a year old now and still going strong.

Nine months later, not one....but BOTH batteries gave out on them. Within weeks of each other. And on the battery it says to replace with Pansonic brand batteries only. BullS**t! I went out and bought some Radioshack batteries at $15 each. We'll see how they fair.

I will say however, I've never owned a uniden.

Yes I've owned both. Vtech sounded like a tin can with string between them and the panasonic has been flawless for 1.5 years now.

My Uniden phone died (actually functions unreliably) after light use, but outside of warranty. I'm not sure I want to buy a new battery to see if it's still good.
