V-sync on instead? I got pretty high refresh rates...

I've just been checking out some tweaking on the Radeon and while before I always thought to turn off v-sync, I'm thinking why not keep it on? The only disadvantage to if being off is possibly artifacts which I really never noticed before but then again using a voodoo banshee I never bothered to look how good the graphics looked since I was more concerned with speed. Now with a Radeon, I play games in 1280x1024 or 1600x1200. My refresh rates for those resolutions are 100hz and 80hz, respectively. I doubt I'll be going over 100fps or 80fps because most of my tweaks are for image quality. I'm happy if I'm just getting 40+fps if the image quality is really good.

So can anyone give me a reason not to have v-sync on since my refresh rates seem high enough.

If you don't see any artifacts when it's turned off, leave it off. If you do see artifacts, turn it on. It's that simple.

Well, since you don't see any difference either way, it doesn't matter what you do, especially since it'll probably never reach your refresh rate. I would just keep it on unless you are trying to show off your fps. 😉

I keep it on (except for benchmarks) because I notice tearing, esp. when the framerate lowers

???

You should get tearing when your framerates are too *high*.

I get tearing regardless, but when the framerate is high, everything is running smooth enough that it doesn't matter much. At lower FPS (say 40 and under), I notice the choppiness as it half-draws the new frame if I am moving extremely fast (skiing in tribes, FI).

I have always kept my V-sync on cause I get alot of tearing when I play pretty much any 3d game. My performance hardly even gets better when I turn it off, in 3dmark 2k I only got an extra 4 points when I turned it off.

There's a difference between tearing (high FPS) and choppiness (low FPS). Vsync doesn't affect low framerates hence you still get choppiness when it's on.
