Egg in a Basket

sweet. i'm definitely going to make this today. after I saw it in the movie, i've been craving it since.

1. Don't break the yolk.
2. Take the piece of bread that you cut out (the square or circle) and cook it too. Use the cutout to dip into the gooey yolk.

mmmmmmmmmmm...

ok tried it.

cutting a hole w/a shot glass doesnt work. the hole's not big enuf. the egg spills on top of the toast, thus doesnt cook. (and i was using medium size eggs.) i had to flip it over to cook the whites.

now to find something 50% bigger than a shot glass to cut the hole.

oh, and make sure you butter all the bread. w/o the butter, theres no effect on the bread if you apply medium heat to it.

I grew up actually eating this; my dad was born in the UK.

We always called it Toad in the Hole.

I cook it for breakfast on the weekends a couple times month and my fiance loves it!

We both got a kick out of seeing it in the movie! Do you have any idea how many props I got from the SO for that :D

Cooking instructions:

1) Butter both sides of the bread
2) Cut a round hole out of the middle by using a small glass, or mason jar lid! (2"-3" in diameter)
3) Toss bread it in preheated frying pan and carefully drop your egg in the hole.
3.5) Season with salt and pepper to taste.
4) Make sure you are cooking on low heat (like when you're making grilled cheese) - you need to make sure the egg gets cooked through without the bread burning.
5) About 2 minutes on each side, depending on how you like your eggs.
6) I flip with a spatula; don't have the skillz to toss it in the air to flip without breaking the yolk

You HAVE to try this, especially if you're cooking for SO or family/kids. They will LOVE it!

Cheers to all

Alan On The "V For Vendetta" Movie

Alan gave some details about bits of the V For Vendetta shooting script he'd seen. "It was imbecilic; it had plot holes you couldn't have got away with in Whizzer And Chips in the nineteen sixties. Plot holes no one had noticed."

What Moore found most laughable however were the details. "They don't know what British people have for breakfast, they couldn't be bothered. 'Eggy in a basket' apparently. Now the US have 'eggs in a basket,' whish is fried bread with a fried egg in a hole in the middle. I guess they thought we must eat that as well, and thought 'eggy in a basket' was a quaint and Olde Worlde version. And they decided that the British postal service is called Fedco. They'll have thought something like, 'well, what's a British version of FedEx... how about FedCo? A friend of mine had to point out to them that the Fed, in FedEx comes from 'Federal Express.' America is a federal republic, Britain is not."

For those of you who don't know, Alan Moore is the guy who wrote the comic book. Apparently he got really pissed off by the script and ranted about it. He rants about a lot of things, but then he's one of the greates comic book writers of all time.

Where did you find this, tangent?
