v.92 modem standard

Once this standard rolls around, would current modem users be able to flash-upgrade to the v.92 standard, providing that their modem manufacturers do release an upgrade?

I would think so, as if it didn't, V92 would be a worthless POS. There are how many millions of modems out there? If they didnt support it, V92 would be quite worthless. (Most modem manuf. released K56 Flex and V90 flash upgrades when those standards were implemented)

Heheh...another paper standard that is a joke in real world conditions. I bet not even 10% of "56K" modem users get over 50,000bps.

Analog modem technology is dead. Unfortunately it is the only option for a large portion of internet users in the U.S. and worldwide. 🙁

Cleaner phone lines is all that can really help you with any modern modem. 😉 Sure, V.92 will probably give you the possibility for higher connections, but when you can't go above 28.8 as is on 56k, chances are slim you'll get above 28.8 with V.92.

I read V92 increased upload data transfers and cut in half the amount of time it takes to connect. So why are we bringing up the "connect rate" issue?

Yeah, RagingBITCH is right.

If it's easily flashable, than who cares, it gives you SOME benifits. If it isn't, its obviously going to hell.

From what I heard on v.92, the modem is all software based. Current modems will not be upgradable (as least that's what I heard)

Bah... do yourself a favor, spend the 50$ on a new modem on the first months broadband internet access bill.. 😛

When the DSL in your area sucks, the cable in your area is flooded by 10 year old movie dling teenagers, and your parents won't let you get broadband, your options are limited 🙁

ok... I would like to mention this. All you f*cks that suggest we just "save up" for broadband can eat me. Why don't you relize that most of us that don't have broandband, CAN'T get it, and won't be getting it soon. So lay off... we are just sol.

I've got an internal 56k modem from Acorp with the Conexant chip (CNX1035) OEM string: FM-56PCI-RWM 1999/04/20 V2.1.2.156.003 HCF

Anyone know if I'm supposed to be able to upgrade to v.92/v.94 ?
I have no idea where I could find it. Used to have great links, but there lost now.

When V92 speeds the upload speed, this will in turn give you just a bit better download speed. This is fact, and I would suggest everyone of you upgrade to this new standard. Some of you say it's going to be a POS, but I welcome it. It adds a little life to decaying dial-up connection. If you don't beleive me about speeding up your downloads, you'll find out soon enough 🙂

"When V92 speeds the upload speed, this will in turn give you just a bit better download speed."

actually you are correct. windowing takes less time, therefor your computer can spend more time on recieving the data rather then sending acknowledgements.

and those of you who think we're stupid to stick with 56k, you will just have to STFU becuase believe me, we ALL want faster access. oh look, it's available.. oh look, it's not expensive.. oh look it's NOT IN MY AREA ^%^#$&T#.. oh look, it won't be for YEARS.

Eeeek... I wasn't flaming 🙁 Maybe I should add more smileys to my post? :Q 😕

sorry...

Preach da ghetto, brotha 🙂

I agree with your assessment. Everybody WANTS faster Internet access, and it's not because we can't afford it, and it's DEFINITELY not because it's unavailable. Some people are just doomed from the get-go by living in an area that your phone/cable provider decided not to upgrade equipment in.

In my area, I can't get a cable modem from Cox@Home because they haven't laid down fiber optic cabling here yet. But my friends 2 miles away can. DSL is out of the question too, because I'm in what a phone company calls a "digital carrier loop." In English, this basically means that your phone company decided to be a cheapass a few years ago by implementing multiplexed lines in neighborhood blocks (they shove like 10-20 numbers on ONE line and still charge you the same).

Now, it looks like the only option around where I live is this relatively new thing in town called Sprint Broadband. It's wireless cable with both downlink and uplink for $40/mo. (not bad at all). But I'm still pondering with whether or not my apartment management will actually let me install the little dish on my balcony; hell, I see neighbors do it with DirecTV dishes, so why can't I?

If you have a Diamond Supra Express 56i Pro, I think you may not be able:

Dear Sir/Madam,
Thanks for your email.

I don't think this is possible, because you need a complete new chip for this
protocol.

Well I'd like to see them more tolerant of line noise. recently had a friend whose brand new PC's couldn't connect about 26.8 kbps as the line noise reaks havoc with V.90.
