Utility to test SCSI hard drives?

I have a Dell server machine with an onboard Adaptec AIC-7899 SCSI controller. I have a feelnig that either the controller or the disks are bad. Is there any conveneint way to test this? MAybe some kind of specialized boot disk?

Hi, I haven't run a SCSI drive in years, but I have a sneaky feeling that most any drive diagnostic will do. Check the drive and board maker's sites. Seems like I remember that most SCSI cards would set up the drive and maybe run a diagnostic. Probably a lot different now. My Rememberer is not so good today but my Forgetter is working 100%

The Firmware in most Host Adapters can run a basic test called Verifying the drive. And most drive mfrs also offer downloadable software for testing their drives. The Hitachi Drive Fitness Test will work on many brands. SCSITool is available thru http://www.scsifaq.org - I'm not sure what all it does offhand.

And finally there is Gibson's SpinRite 6 which can exhaustively test most any drive. It's not free - not even cheap, but should be a part of any techie's software tool kit. It will tell you exactly what sector is bad and what file that sector is located in (if any).
