They've been talking about this on the radio for the past couple of days here in Utah.

They use .30 caliber rifles 4 out of 5 shooters have live ammo.
They place a 3x3" target over the convict's heart.
They choose shooters from law enforcement volunteers.

Going out like a man would be jumping on a grenade to save your fellow soldiers lives or pushing a child out of the way of a bus and getting hit by the bus yourself. This guy is a chicken shit that murdered someone (even though it was a lawyer it's still wrong) in cold blood then filed appeal after appeal trying to get out of it.

Man not found.

All the heart does is pump blood. You'd have a few useful seconds of being "alive" even if it were ripped out of your chest. Once the flow of blood stopped to the brain...buh-bye.

Not necessarily. You are not accounting for the hydraulic effect of a couple thousand foot pounds of energy, a significant proportion of which is transferred the organ connected to all of the largest blood vessels in the body including those going to the brain. It often has the effect of bursting blood vessels in the brain. Instant lights out. Saw the effect many times in heart and lung shot deer when deer hunting. Blood would even leak from the ears sometimes.

I believe that historically, soldiers were executed by firing squad and criminals were hung. This was a pretty good option for him as far as old-timey honour is concerned.

Read the story of his life this morning too. Guy is a movie. Someone should buy the rights to it, right now.

And yet, people still hurt for him and care about him:

June 18, 2010 — Ronnie Lee Gardner's daughter talks about his execution, at a family vigil across from the prison.

The US media will make a shitstorm out of it. Just like they tend to do of everything else.
Personally I say give the inmate the choice of LI, Firing Squad, Hanging, or Electric Chair.
It doesn't matter how you go, you are still dead.

I disagree.
The government should limit this least to the 3 least expensive options and leave it at that.

4/5 is no different than 1/5 from the executioners' POV. (the argument being that each individual has no certainty that they were responsible for the kill).

plus, you increase the chances of an instant kill.

Movies are made out of much less. Watch for the book, followed by the movie starring Woody Harrelson.

his character would have to be re-written to get any kind of funding from 95% of the US industry.

it could be done in some other country, though. His life story sucks for a typical movie audience. Few people would want to spend ~2 hours watching someone get shit-on their entire lives, commit horrible crimes, continue to get shit-on, murder, then get executed. :\

O'rly? Some people find it fascinating.... how a guy could be such a monster. how his childhood helped to mold him. what kind of parents did this guy have? By age 10 he was a lookout for his stepfather's robberies, but what were his real parents like? Did he know his father at all?

The fact that he went out firing squad style just adds points to the plot.

I believe I am right on this one. Book, then movie.

BTW... this guy actually killed TWO people not one.

He killed one guy and then while in court took a smuggled gun and killed the lawyer, might have even been his own lawyer I believe.

They should have video tapped it and show it to every person sent to jail in this country with the message "you kill someone and this is what will happen to you"

Great idea mosh!!

I have an idea to spice it up even more. I'll play the prisoner and you play the wardens wife :)

They always mix that stuff in. ;)

He had a daughter when he was 16 and a son a couple of years later. I'd imagine the risque sex part will be part of the movie too.

If you fired a blank round, you would know it. There's no recoil. So whoever had blanks, and whoever had live rounds, they know.

So the purpose has to be other than the shooter's conscience. Those who fired live rounds are well aware that they fired live rounds at a human being.

Supposedly they used a wax bullet instead of a blank round with Gardner. However, this will still be obvious to an experienced shooter.

The guys volunteered to be on the squad, I think they sleep just fine at night.
I wonder how much of his personality was effected due to his addictions as a child.
