Utah Boy Dragged From Tent, Killed By Bear During Camping Trip

Horrible, horrible way to go, but I highly doubt they followed proper safety protocols including removing all food and smellables from their tent. Bear probably smelled something dumb like toothpaste, got to the tent, and saw the boy as being the smallest.

I personally never go camping without a gun. Just always been what I do.

You better be packing some pretty serious firepower if you actually expect to be able to combat a bear; especially if it's a handgun.

Man that is sad. A dog would have alerted the family and probably saved him.

It was a 300 pound black bear so the dog or two probably could have fought the bear.

QFT

Bears are shy, and usually won't attack humans unless they have food. The boy probably hid food in his tent.

great news for me to hear .... considering I'm going camping this Saturday!

poor kid though, that musta been scary as hell.

note to self: if going camping make sure to sleep with .454 Casull Ruger Super Redhawk grasped in one hand

Generally a 357 Magnum is considered minimum for a black bear, 44 Magnum for a brown bear. 9mm just won't cut it.

A 500 S&W Magnum will take down a Grizzly.

Probably, but that is a lot of handgun for most people. My skinny @ss would probably never practice with it.

I'd prefer a Marlin guide gun in 45/70 government with handloads, still a lot of gun but much more manageable for me.

The dog does not really need to be big or fight the bear. It will hear and smell the bear coming way before the people will, and raise holy hell about it.
