UT3

OMG! I DLd the updated version of UT3 and whoa, baby! hell yes!!! what a blast from the past. Back in the day I never even finished the campaign since my life was introduced to CTF and my family didnt see me for about two years. LOL

Anyway, I started playing it last night and I forgot how frigg'n fast paced that game was as I had to take a break from it after about 35 minutes. I'm now in the CTF level called "Coret"

and what a fun time to be had there. I'm playing solo, but the games AI is so great that I had forgot about that too. And all the great weapons are so fun and the translocator is the bomb!

Sorry for sounding like a kid but this game is my favorite EVER and now I get to play it again, are you kidding me 🙂

Btw, I started FPS back in the day and my first one was called DOOM which I played on my 486DX2 computer which I got from 'Comp USA' which had a whopping size HDD of 390meg (I think)...with a 14" monitor!! can you believe it a 14" monitor?? hehe

Later, and have a great day!!

IMO the current build is a milestone from the last build. fyi they release a new build every month. At the end of Oct they will introduce DX12 into either UT4 or the UE4 engine. The game flies already and I'm on a 6 core 1366 socket 5-6yr old rig! 🙂

Yeah there was a few on Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers doing DM. Greed was popular. Earlier in the UT3 series CTF was popular. Loved all those maps

Good times

The Unreal 3 engine is great. All of the games that use it have a distinctive nice look and you can usually tell it's that engine.

Also the visuals hold up remarkably well compared to newer engines. I'm playing through Betrayer (2014), and the graphics are absolutely gorgeous. I've never seen outdoor areas rendered so true-to-life. It's like walking around outdoors for real.

What's even more amazing is that it's an indie game and was probably made on a shoe-string budget.

Also Thief 4 has amazing lighting and shadowing using the same engine.

I may give this a try.

I used to dominate in UT99, instagib low grav CTF. So many good memories.

Give the new UT4 a try, it's free. Just sign up

On ModDB there are Classic Map Packs that add a whole load of classic UT maps to UT3. Total size is about 2.5GB but split into a main file & 2 expansions.

I've been looking to get into a legit arena shooter recently and hopefully it turns out great.

I've always believed that UT3 was and unfortunately still is being quite underrated. It's definitely not as "bad" as a lot of people were lead to believe. And those who actually played it and never liked it... well I have read some arguments around and they usually refer to the GUI being "consolized" (which isn't exactly false by the way), but once the match begins the actual HUD is just fine, it's accurate and non obtrusive, doesn't "block" the action from view, isn't too big and... really there's nothing wrong with it.

The actual game-play mechanics are fun as usual (typical arena shooter mechanics), nothing changed for the worse about them. I don't get the "it's a lot worse than UT99 and UT 2004!" propaganda going on (well, not by now of course but it was going on a couple of years ago when the game was still fresh). The animations are good, character models are superb, weapon models are great-looking and still maintain their "old-school sci-fi" style, sound effects are good, cheesy voice acting for taunts just as cheesy as they ever needed to be (in a good way). The gore is nice, the mutators are still there if you want to add them (our classic instagib and low gravity were left intact, among others) and even though UT3 wasn't as "friendly" and "productive" for the modding community as UT99 or UT 2004 were, there's still some mods and custom maps around (although I admit my absolute favorites will always be for UT 2004).

The action can be fast-paced, frantic, there's a good number of modes to choose from. I mean it's all there, never understood the hate nor the complaints about it. It even still looks very good to this day on maximum settings, there's no major bugs I can think of that would have been left untouched over the years (pretty well fixed game actually as it is right now), everything works fine, no crashes, no slow downs, game runs super fast on modern hardware. I mean... it's all there, it's a good game.

All UT3 things considered, however, I can safely say that my favorite is still UT 2004. But I certainly enjoy UT3 enough to keep it installed and start it up for some matches against the A.I. every now and then and have my fun for a time. I don't play it for hours non-stop when I do but it's never a boring session. I know I'll see a lot of disagreements on this one but I've watched UT4 game-play (filtered it by "this month" to see recent builds) on YouTube and, really, there's very little difference between that and UT3 other than the obvious better textures and surfaces / shaders quality. It plays pretty much the same, weapons are about identical, etc. Not that I do not 'welcome' the arrival of a new UT game in the franchise, sure it's gonna be cool I suppose but UT3 serves its purpose very well, it's just the mass who stopped playing it, for some reasons.
