I thought for sure "this game is going to own, I will buy this without looking at the reviews. What a mistake!!!
Won't do it again with them.
Yup. Remember, the UT99 pro community liked the game play of the Beta Demo. They were ready to move to UT3 even though they thought it was inferior to UT99. Then when everyone found out that the Retail Release = Beta Demo, they lost interest. They continue to play UT99 CTF 5v5 pug matches and to organize MLUT (Major League UT) tournaments to this day.

What I find most bothersome is that I get the impression that Epic has no clue as to why UT3 failed and why the original UT99 was such a smashing success. No clue at all.
Like ID they decided to cater to the console market because thats where the money is at. In the process they made a suck-ass game. And to top it off, its not that popular in the console world.

I can only assume you are about 15. Thus, when UT came out in '99 you were about 5, so missed out on the greatness. UT04 you would have been 10, and also likely to have missed out on a super solid game. But here you are with UT3, your generation's "definitive" online shooter, so to you it looks and plays well. Hey, if you enjoy it, that's great, but no, it is a far inferior game to its predecessors.

Don't mind the smug jackass. UT3 isn't a bad game, it's just that most gamers have moved on from the twitch FPS thing now. I wouldn't say it's better than the other UT's but it's practically the same damn game at its core so I don't what everyone keeps whining about - other than the fact that no one plays it, that is.

it was so successful with UT99, but damn did they get all the important things right.

for UT, you are officially dead.

Reallyscrued, if you want to play UT99 again, you can still do it and have a lot of fun. There is a group of people who enjoy playing PUG (Pickup Games) matches which are similar to 5v5 clan matches but there aren't any scheduled times or fixed teams. Rather, you just join an IRC server and sign up when you want to play. (You type .join.) When it fills to 10 people, two people become team captains and pick the other eight players. It's very cool and lots of fun, so come check it out.

Server: irc.gameradius.net
Channel: #speedpug

You'll find the action during North American prime time, from say 7 pm U.S. EST to 2 am.

Yeah, the UT formula has stayed relatively consistent since UT99. They added extra game modes for depth, but deathmatch, team deathmatch and CTF have stayed the same, so it's not like they destroyed the core UT99 gameplay, so it can't be SO BAD compared to UT99.

It's not like they took a shit on the old game. They just built on top of it. If you're a purist, just play UT99. If you want a slightly "modernized" experience that still maintains the core feeling of the UT series, UT3 is fine.

All they really need to do is remake UT99 in the UE3, detail the levels better, and fix the UI, and everyone would rush in.

What makes me laugh is how the "Make Something Unreal" Contest where they and Intel are giving away $1M worth of prizes for custom content, is still going on. If they would have put that $1m to revamping the UI and bugfixing hardcore for 1 month, they would have gotten so much farther.

The fact that it's still going gives me the slightest bit of hope they'll do a UT3-2 like UT2k4.

I don't know if it has already been mentioned here but when UT3 was still in beta a lot of fans/players of the original who disliked UT2003/2004 were really excited because they thought the core gameplay of UT3 was more in line with the series roots. Unfortunately Epic released UT3 as an unfinished work in progress and most if not all of that excitement went down the drain.

Imo, UT2004 was the best game in the series, but UT was the best for its time.
UT3 has some impressive mod tools though, I'd love to see it embraced by the modding community. Afaik, the main game is dead though.

Face Classic? I'm tingly all over. :)

WhipperSnappa, I will check out those servers, but I'm pretty content with my friends and I just hosting a vanilla server of our own.

I don't like UT3 I've given it numerous chances since before it was released; it just isn't fun. I can play the occasional game of it with 2 or 3 friends max, but that's it. Add more people, or make them strangers, and it's just annoying.

You should see this now UT3 is dead and UT2k4 may have 5 or 6 server running that have people in them and 90% of them are using Helios ver3 and not worth dealing with.
I am hoping someone will come out with and anti cheat for UT3 but it is not likely as epic makes you pay for the source code now and it is almost imposable to make any kind of mods.
Ya they really stuck it to the PC crowed, all the UT fans.

my clan plays Team arena master mod for UT2004 nightly.. anywhere between 6-10 guys. and there are other TAM server's running. a handful yes.

And i dont see why UT99 was revered as the best. UT2004 was a great game, i only played a little bit of 99. But still think 2k4 was the best. 2K3 is basically 2K4 but the inferior version. and UT3...all i can say is, almost our entire clan choose not to get UT3..we all played the beta, thought ehh its ok.(i wasnt getting it, they removed the lighting gun.) That adds about 20 people from the UT2004 community not getting UT3. and im pretty sure that there are plenty more who did the same.

Wat?

I've not seen anyone using hax for the longest time, & i still play UT2k4.

If you are playing in Rankin demo servers, well, lol, then you're getting what you paid for (though even there, i've not seen hax forever either).

Play in some decent servers, no hax.

Fury, i have you on my Xfire...do you play anything but TAM?

I usually just do TDM or if i want to get my ass kicked, 1v1s.

i play what my friend's list is playing, and thats typically Tam, im not opposed to TDM or any other mod though. I like Tam because its more well rounded than TDM. allows the sucky players that slight advantage while not giving them the "mario kart" power-up's.
and adding necro into the mix makes gameplay alot more fun.

the clan im in now or have been in originally got its start playing TDM. we transistioned over to TAM while ago.TAM is like rocket arena of the quake days
i have you on steam as well.. i hate xfire/steam because you cant put nicknames for people. even people i work with i cant put an alias for them, so i dont know who's who hah..but i couldnt do without either :)

And lastly, Why isn't anybody playing it? :^P

In regards to your point below. I rather like the way it looks. From a purely aesthetic point of view I think it's a very nice looking game. I agree that it's too cluttered for arena style combat though.

biggest beaf I think people have is the interface.

Especially after the 2.0 interface update, LOL, they grouped bots as players. Makes it impossible to find a server with real players (and how many). Deathmatch has like 15-20 people in it if I'm lucky when I fire it up. Only thing I still play it for is iCTF on n0x's server.

F this game. I bought this game blindly the day it came out thinking it was going to be an awesome game and they were going to continuously support it. I guess my nostalgia for UT classic really got to me.

I haven't loaded up UT3 for a while since I feel dirty whenever I do it. However, people are still playing UT 2004. I know that there are at least populated Onslaught and Invasion-RPG servers. People are also playing UT99 though it's hard to find populated servers that play regular weapons capture-the-flag. However, there are private 5-on-5 CTF clan-match-style pick-up-games matches that are organized on Internet Relay Chat every night and played on private servers.

Out of curiosity, what is the name of your clan? You wouldn't happen to be a member of Death Warrant would you?

And i dont see why UT99 was revered as the best.

UT99 had the best capture-the-flag game play and it had far, far higher player counts at any given year after it's release than UT 2004 did as well as much more clan activity. Capture-the-flag was the main game in UT99 and people still play it to this day. DOMination also used to be great fun and there were clans for it. There's a reason why people are still playing CTF in UT99 but UT 2004 CTF is dead.

I like UT 2004, too, and think it's a great game, but for Onslaught and Invasion-RPG. Overall I think the UT99 feel and game play is better than UT 2004's.

UT2004 was a great game, i only played a little bit of 99. Oh yeah. Many of the UT99 CTF pros liked the UT3 Demo and then completely lost interest when they discovered that the UT3 retail release was almost the same as the Beta Demo as far as the user interface and server browser were concerned (a huge joke; an abortion).

Me too. $50 down the drain never doing that again.

I dropped $57 on the Collector's Edition two days after UT3's release. However, I knew what I was getting into because I had read the reports about the UI that filtered out from Germany. I had wanted to hurry up and pump out a remake of my best UT99 custom capture-the-flag map in the hopes that it might become a popular accepted custom map.

I played Warfare and a little CTF for about four months until I bought Sins of a Solar Empire. Then I completely lost all interest in UT3. I don't feel badly about my purchase. I bought the original UT99 for $10 and UT 2004 for $10 and I have more than received a huge amount of value for the $77 total that I've spent on Unreal Tournament. It was my top game from Feb 2001 until March 2008.
