UT2004 $8.36 shipped to Missouri at the egg

Thanks, been meaning to grab this one for a while... will have to see if I can convert the CD's into a DVD version...

Well, I finally ordered a copy. Now I need to build a computer that will be able to play it.

Everyone in the UT '99 community who's tried it says that UT 2004 is far inferior to the original. Guess I'll get to find out for myself if I ever build a new rig. Of course, by the time I finally finish building a new computer, UT 2007 will be out.

UT'99 = original UT? In what way is the new one inferior? Seems to be one problem with the old one - runs choppy on my new computer while the new one runs smooth. Anyone else see this problem?

People in the UT '99 (yes, the original Unreal Tournament) regard the UT 2003/2004 as having inferior game play. The "feel" of the game along with the weapons and game play were changed dramatically for UT 2003/2004 (addition of adrenaline, Super Mario-styled double jump, limited translocater, weakened shock rifle and rocket launcher, loss of sniper rifle/puff of smoke, larger sized maps, clay pigeon-like feel as players fly through the air instead of running around on the ground resulting in larger maps to accomodate it, shield gun ruining Capture-the-Flag.) In fact, there is (or was) a project to create a UT '99 style mod for the game called the UT Revolution Project.

The general consensus was that UT 2003 was awful and that UT 2004 was merely tolerable. Go to http://www.UnrealPlayground.com and find the discussion forums. Look for the UT 2003/2004 forum and seek out the comments from September 2002.

Who knows, maybe I'll like it. I figured it would be worth a try for $9 to judge it for myself, and maybe the UT Revolution mod will be finished one day. (All the original UT players wanted was a bona fide UT-2 with the exact same game play but better graphics and net coding and not a completely different game.)

Here's a forum thread about UT 2007:

Thanks for the links. Perhaps I'll find a fix for the choppyness... already found a link to updated DLL files for UT (updated DX and OpenGL support). Back in the day we used to play CTF and Assault all the time because nobody wanted to play Quake3 (because I almost always won 😎 ).

I sort of have to agree with WhipperSnapper. I played UT a lot back when I was on dialup and just thought it was great. When I read about the drastic changes they were making I sort of lost interest in the title. UT had such a fast aggressive pace I couldn't see how all those wacky combo things would help matters. Still, for this price I may consider picking it up. Who knows?

The shock rifle is better now in 2004 than I remember in the original. The RL is slightly weakened but that is a good thing. THe Flak cannon is weakened as well but a lot of people still tear it up. I like the lightning gun more than the sniper rifle because it isn't overpowering. The double jump isn't really much of a good or bad thing, neither is the adrenaline. Still a fast paced, awesome DM game.

Does anyoen know about using the DX9 dll for UT2004 instead of DX? I know you can simply put D3D9X.dll or whatever it is in the directory, then edit the .ini to use that renderer instead, but I'm not sure if it's for IQ, performance, or what?
