I snagged it from nVidia and I like it. I don't really care for the quips that the guys make when they toast you though. Overall I think it is well done. They eye candy is shockingly good. Screen shots just don't do it justice. The water on the antaeus map is stunning.

Ditto, it is running surprisingly well on my Radeon 8500 (overclocked). I'd expected dismal framerates, but it runs nice (not as smooth as I'm used to with OG UT and Q3 though). The gameplay is f*cking awesome. I fired it up with average expectations and was blown away.

Wondering if there's anyone willing to host an AT/ATOT game

It looks incredible.

When Tribes2 came out, I was critical of Dynamix for changing the game. I wanted them to just make T1 look better.

It looks like that's what UT2003 is. UT with better visuals. But, I was bored with it after playing for 15 minutes. Unless there's something really innovative that the demo doesn't show, I don't think I'll be buying this one.

Just out of curiosity, what is everyone running for systems.

I am running the demo on a 2000+ with 512K and a GF3.

I am running it at 1024x768 32 bit with good frame rates. I am interested to see what the demo will do on my Ti4600 as soon as I get it back from RMA.

Yeah, this game runs surprisingly fast. The 3d audio is exceptional also, even though I can't seem to get it work right in hardware with my Santa Cruz machine. It works great in the Acoustic Edge and Audigy box though.

Anyway, here is what I'm getting at 1024x768x32 for comparison (although I normally play above that res).

Box #1
Flyby: 143.7
Botmatch: 54.6

Box #2
Flyby: 95.4
Botmatch: 39.3

my specs

Running with MAX settings under Direct3d. I can't seem to get this benchmark to work in OpenGL. The game itself runs fine in OpenGL, though. As far as I can tell, visually and speed wise, there isn't much of a difference between the two renderers, but I won't know for sure until I can get a solid benchmark comparison.

Considering how much I looked forward to it, I feel a bit let down - it's kinda like "The Phantom Menace". It's still pretty good, but it's hard to rave over.

The Good:
* It looks great (and these are only half-rez textures?)
* Models look good (though no chicks? I always play a female model.)
* Run smooth at 1024x768x32 on 1900+/768 RAM/Ti4400 @ 295/650
* The "ragdoll" death animations are cool! No more stiff bodies floating in air. I follow some bouncing gibs down a slope. Funny!

The Not-So-Good:
* The new weapons aren't enough like the old UT weapons, in look and feel. You don't know what you're using.
* What the hell is this Adrenaline thing. If it's like a turbo boost, why doesn't it dissipate as you bust moves? Once you hit 100, it stays there, though there are still plenty of pills.
* CTF feels sloooooooooow. (And how do you get to that Mega-Health on that ball?)

The Ugly:
* The sounds are pitiful, lacking punch and boom on an Audigy Platinum and HW+EAX 3.0 on.
* The HUD is too spread out. While it's pretty and they finally made the original Unreal's ammo level indicators visible, it's tough to have to monitor four corners while running and shooting. It should all be in the bottom half like UT and Q3 did. It'd be great it we could customize the placement of EVERYTHING like Tribes did.

Benches:
* Flyby - 136
* Botmatch - 48.8

(This is with AV running, etc.)

About adrenaline
4 tap front button - speed
4 tap back - booster (health regenerates)
2 right and 2 left - Invisibility

I am not a UT fan..But this by far is their best! The sounds are awsome..First fired it up and wife said is it thundering :D THe gameplay is a lot better..Before this UT seemed harder to move than in Q3..Now though it is sweet..Graphics are great for half textures :Q

I will be buying this..I don't buy many...

I play UT almost everyday for 2-3 hours. I have to say so far UT2003 is nothing impressive and a step back from the quick awesome gameplay UT has. Weapons seem weak and graphics, while nice, seems to slow the whole gamplay down.
What's with the sniper rifle again? what genious thought of that, it's terrible, not even realistic.

I like the game alot. Playing by yourself sucks. It's playing online thats great. I'm always critical of myself if I do bad at most FPS like Q2, Q3, UT, and now I can add UT2k3 to the list.

Graphics are great, smooth, effects look real nice. Death scenes are quite nice now as well. I haven't touched an FPS like this in quite some time. Warcraft 3 and Madden 2003 were taking most of my time. It's nice to get back to the basics. :)

It's pretty nice. Not *great*, but I didn't expect it to be.

I'll probably pick it up when it falls to $19.95.

I'm sure that will change when the mod makers step up and create some real weapons like they did in Inflitration, Strike Force and Tac Ops for UT.

INF was the best and most realistic with the weapons own iron sights instead of that stupid crosshair, and the run speed slowing down as the player gets tired of running till he rests a bit. Things should get interesting with the military mods for UT2k3 as the hilly terrain makes for better use of prone and ducking.

Haven't tried BF 1942 yet to compare but I hear good things about it.

It didn't blow my away at first, but I've really started to like it. It is different than UT, but once you get used to it a little its fun. Plus, the graphics should impove significantly once the full game comes out with its 2x's larger textures.

If you type preferences into the console, you can set the texture levels to Ultra-High for everything and it carries over to the regular control panel. I haven't compared if it's actually smoother (gotta get going out tonight), but it does look like something may be happening. It also has caused some hitching to occur, so there may be texture swapping going on. What, 128MB of video RAM may not be enough?!?

Over on the official ut2k3 boards the word is that changing the texture levels to ultra-high doesn't do anything since ultra-high res textures were not included. That may be incorrect however.

Edit: I just tried changing the texture levels to ultra-high and it didnt do anything. Makes sense though.

UT is just so mindless to me i cant really enjoy it, I feel Q3 even has more strategy and skill involved idk.

Hardcore UT fan here - overall its a better game, weapons have been tweaked, graphics better, beautiful and well designed levels. I agree that the sniper rifle is less realistic but that's aminor complaint. All new games take some getting used to...especially with all the changes in weapons and game physics....but this one is a winner.

There are sure a lot of whiners in here though. Either people wo have played UT and hate any change of any kind, better or worse or people who seem to have not ever played much UT or tried any mods and are speaking with no experience (names omitted to protect the ridiculous).

So much of what people are saying here is a matter of personal taste. I think the game is well done as a whole. It runs fast on mid-level systems (important to me) and it looks good. I personally like playing these types of games. I'll probably pick this one up.

Here's why it's good (IMHO)

The rocket. They finally fixed the frickin thing. I'm a Q3 player and Q3 is the Formula One of 3D Shooters. The raw skill involved in having a simple duel with rockets in Q3 is something that other FPS's havn't even touched.

UT was great looking, the added gameplay modes and little features were awesome. I couldn't continue to play it though because of that frickin rocket. I had two choices: Have instant response/firing from the rocket (Q3 style) **OR** be able to fire a bunch of them at once. You couldn't have both options. I think this really detracted from the gameplay in UT.

I'm quite happy with the solution they've come up with in UT2k3. They removed the grenade from the secondary fire altogether (6 grenades at once is skill-less SPAM no matter how you put it). Trying to get the timing down to release 3 rockets together requires some skill without going overboard into 6 rockets (starting to be spam again).

As a Q3 player I still have a bit of trouble with the dodging feature though. Q3 has some deliberate 'slop' in the feel of the controls. When you let off the movement key your player slows to a stop in about 1/4 of a second. In UT it stops instantly. I find myself expecting that additional 12" of player movement and when it doesn't happen I hit the move key once more. This oftentimes causes me to inadvertently 'dodge'. Dodging is nifty and easy to do, I'm just used to having to pull of a circle-strafejump from a standstill to accomplish the same thing :)

The graphics are nothing more than what I expected: Beautiful.

The gameplay is shaping up to be more than I had hoped for. :)

Completely disapointed!
Dont get me wrong, ut was one of my favorite games.

I am running it on a p4 1.8 @ 2200 and ATI 9700 4X-16X and it looks sweet .
But it is a bit on the cartoonish side and the maps were boring and small. The free army game looks better.

I like BF 1942 allot better.

UT2003 is more for kids, it take no skill to play.
I was going to pick this game up but now I am going to pass.

I hope unreal champ for xbox does not play this bad.
peace
