UT2003 [POLL]

I've been an on-and-off hardcore UT player for about 2-3 years now. I really like the UT 2k3 demo, after playing it for about 4 hours (although didn't completely at first).

When I first got the demo, I though "my god, the graphics are incredible" .. but I had this sinking feeling that it was nowhere near to as good as the original. There's also the harsh realisation that you are nowhere near as skilled as in regular UT, and I think this is why a number of hardcore UT players don't like the new UT 2k3 ...

After playing it for a few more hours, I can say that I think this new game is awesome. The gameplay is very good, and the guns have indeed been re-tweaked. Oh yeah and adrenaline is your daddy (maybe hotkeys for the commands would have been better, but this way n00bs don't know how to use it, and they get 0wned even more 😉.

I was a big-time user of the shock rifle, flak cannon, sniper and minigun in the original, and they play very differently now. One funny comment I hear about the new UT is that the shock rifle is useless, the ball goes too slow, etc. This is rubbish! It's still amazing, but even harder to use now; I have practised with it for a couple of hours and it's very very good. It does not need any tweaking at all, IMO!

One of the only flaws I can find is that I think the Rocket Launcher is a bit too powerful (all other guns are near perfect). The RL goes MUCH faster now, so it's way harder to dodge. I've seen much more RL whores in the game than anything else so far, but, again it's a demo, and they'll probably learn there are other guns to use!

Oh yeah and bombing run is your other daddy!

i definitely like the ut2k3 demo. Its got some incredible graphics...(I can't wait to see what the full version looks like). As with any new game, it takes time to get a feeling for the game, and its no different from ut2k3. I love the original UT, and I play it often still today. Some of the weapons feel different, but nothing major. The weapons in the original UT i thought were well balanced, and the sequel seems to be a little more balanced. I like the fact that the sniper rifle (lightning gun), now takes longer to reload, and that you can see where the shot is coming from. That should discourage camping. Overall, I love the ut2k3 demo.

Agreed CubicZirconia, this is one of the few demo's that actually wanted me to drop some cash down for the full version 🙂

Just had a 16 player match bombing run with instagib which was way cool. There was actually some teamplay, I had never seen that before in the demo.

I never played these types of games, so i'm impressed with it 🙂

Tossin' the idea around of buyin' it, still not sure 😕 I buy the new titles and shelf them within' a couple weeks, back to Nascar 2002 🙂 But this UT2003 demo is fun...

I bought and played both Q3 and UT. Q3 was more of a technology showcase(at the time) and I enjoy(ed) the different games which made use of the engine.
UT IMHO was more of a game, and I found that I played and enjoyed it much more than Q3.
UT2K3 seems to be taking the Q3 role, great graphics and a great engine but the gameplay doesn't excite me like the original UT.
I can't wait for the games which will come out using this engine, but AFA longterm playability of UT2K3 itself I'm not sure it will have any staying power for me.
Been there, done that.

I will agree with you also!

I think it does take on some of the Q3 look. I didn't like this at first, but like someone said "it has grown on me.".

Keep the poll going....

For me, yes. I don't have the best of hardware and XP already eats up enough resources.

In Debian I have the resolution at 1024x768 and all of the details on max and it is very playable. I had to dumb down a lot of things in Windows to be able to play smoothley...

Great game so far. I think the demo barely gives us a taste of what the full game offers though. I mean it already looks incredible and the textures that come with the demo are roughly half the resolution that will come with the full game! Can't wait to see all the new maps, models, weapons, etc.

Ginfest is right -- it looks like a big quake3 ripoff, and I hated quake3. I suppose you can't really tell for sure until the real game comes out, but so far I prefer the original UT. I've feared that all the new games based on the Quake engine would suck, but I never thought I'd have to worry about unreal engine games too. Everything looks too "slick", I can't really describe it but I imagine it is a product of the rendering technology, a convergence in other words.

Crap.

Buggy. B-O-R-I-N-G. CTF is sluggish. Items are so LARGE I think I'm an old fart using accessibility mode.

And the graphics aren't even that great.

Rather play Q3A.

Loved it... Until I installed the patch and was immediately unable to play online as clicking the multiplayer button freezes my machine now.

I only play for super fast, low gravity, instagib bombing run .... got me feeling like when I played Q2 CTF 🙂

edit: Oh, also with teleporter enabled.
