I see all the cool benchmarks posted here and decided to see what my old system can do for this new game.
This is really good for a laugh.

So last night I downloaded and installed The UT 2003 demo. I had no time for a full range of benchmarks but i will do those and post later.

My system is viewable in my rig's link. (p3-500 @561 | 256mb pc133 | Voodoo5 | Aureal Vortex2)
I regularly play UT and TacOps on this machine.

I ran the game just to see how it'd run. Ran fine for about 3 minutes, changed some settings...
When I quit to the desktop, there were refresh lines on the screen (kinda like you'd see on a screen in a videom but there were both horiz and vert lines thick and thin, randomly moving around...). I run my desktop @ 1600x1200x32 on my dell 19".
After fooling with my desktop settings, I finally just had to reboot to make the shimmering go away.

SO I ran the benchmark.exe at 1024x768 figuring that it'd be the first res I'd try to play.
It completed flyby just fine (I could tell it was not gonna be playable) and about a minute into botmatch the screen displayed some corrupt polys and stuff and the comp froze.

So tonight I'm gonna try de-O'Cing my box, starting at 640x480 and running more tests.

I have one question, where do the batch files come from that are referenced in some of these threads? I saw no benchmarking batch files, only the benchmark.exe.

The batch files are in C:\...\UT2003Demo\Benchmark. Also, make sure you download and install the demo patch ~3MB.

Yeah I did the demo patch before I even tried the game. My understanding was/is that the game won't even run on a voodoo without it...?
I'm really not even gonna try to buy the game until I have a system that will run it, but one thing I hate about the typical review (even anandtech's) is that they never review stuff based on old systems. the slowest system I've seen em review on lately is the GPU/ CPU scaling @800mhz. there is no way to tell if a system like mine will run anything until i try it. Not everyone can afford to have the latest stuff, and I bet there are a lot of people out there who would love to see some old stuff thrown in to the reviews just for statistics value. (for instance I wanna see a voodoo3 paired against the R9700 in speed running Q3A or something, that will give me a real life clue as to what the difference is between what have and the newest. For God's sake, they still throw the GF256 into these reviews and thats practically the same generation as the Voodoo5 as far as release times, (I think) < /end rant > heh

this might have something to do with the shimering issue. granted what is discibed there is a bit different but i figured i would point it out anyway in the hopes that it might solve your problem too.

Thank you, that's very helpful. I'll try setting my desktop to 16 bit tonight when I run the other tests...

1.)Interesting that using Hardware 3d sound made it faster... probably because my CPU is so slow and needed the help.
2.)Even before I ever ran the game at 32bit, I set desktop to 16bit and the shimmering after game end still happened consistently.
3.) I didn't use the shadows because they'd lockup the game everytime and plsu, they looked really weird.

End result is, you'll need a good system to run this game on.

weird. I did try to play online. it was playable at 640x480x16 at lowest levels and in fact I kicekd some butt on an insta-gib server.
Realistically though this card should even attempt to run this game, and I am planning on building a new pc around or after christmas anyway...
