Installed Windows XP Pro, installed the latest ATi XP drivers, installed UT 436. And currently I?m getting between 45-30 FPS at 1024x766@32. Running WinME I would normally get 60-70 FPS with the same settings. What is everyone else getting under XP are the ATi drivers really that slow? Losing over half my FPS simply isn?t Acceptable.

*Update

I switched to OpenGL out sheer curiosity and I?m now getting 75-80+ FPS, not bad! So WTF did ATi do to their D3D portion of their drivers to kill UT performance so much?

You need the 3286 drivers and the 60mhz refresh rate fix. This will improve your scores in all games, fix some issues, and enable smoothvision. However, in OpenGL it will break the S3TC textures. Should be fixed again in the next driver release.

Alright, I?ll give the 3286 drivers a go and see what happens with them. Yeah, the 60mhz refresh rate thing has been bugging me. As far as I know the only way around it is to use PowerStrip, correct?

So 3286 drivers don?t support the S3 compressed textures at all or just not in OpenGL? I always thought the only way to use the textures was through OpenGL, or has that changed? I never had the S3 textures working since OpenGL with UT was rather unstable with Win9x, but I?d like to be able to use them if possible.

To get the full UT quality:

get the hires textures installed. then extract the old ATi atioglxx.dll
from previous drivers(3226,3276) and put them in your system32 in exchange with the new ones that came with the 3286 drivers. Then it works again. This is for the Ati 8500, since the 3286 driver is for 8500, not for the Radeon256.
