Bill gates should build a fleet of Bill Gate ships. That would just rock 🙂

The MS Battleship Windows 🙂 That would scare those terrorists back into shape!

Unfrotunately they would go blue screen and be defensless for a few hours until they reboot. Then after a few times they'd have to dock the ship for a reformat. 😀

LOL
😀

Don't forgot, the ship would only last for 2 yrs before you have to upgrade it...😉

i'm amazed it takes that long to build it though... 7 years?!?

Well it does have over a billion parts.

doesn't take that long for a skyscraper

Yeah, but a skyscraper does not have nuke power plants and steam catapults 😀

Also this will be the last Nimitz class carrier. CVNX class is next. If you thought the b2 was expensive, just wait for the pricetag on a stealth carrier.

I was a Nuke ET when I was in the Navy. I served on the USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72. 1990-1992. Gulf War. I loved that ship, there were so many cool things to see and learn about on it. I would love to tour one again just for the nostalgia it would dredge up for me.

Like I have to point out that that ship is going to attract "terrorists" like flies to sh*t.

... only one problem with that theory.

Terrorists are usually not equipped to take on a Carrier Battle Group. They would never even get close to the carrier itself. 🙂

Excellent price for the ship alone.

I remember I had my own ship once. Too bad it went down with one hit of the damn soap torpedo in the tub.

This is wonderful news 🙂

These floating cities carry massive punch .. a battle group alone can take over most nations in the world ..

They will phase out some old ones soon ... also they plan to inroduce stealth missle frigates/cruisers soon.

One thing .. why will it take 8 years to build ?

The super structure is already avaliable and so are the engines. The General Dynamics ship yard has capacity to make 3 at a time.

Well I think basically its 8 years of guarenteed labour for thousands .. oh well .. socilaism is good once in a while

Building a CV equates to socialism? :Q

Actually, a carrier group can't take over many nations as you must hold land for that purpose. But I suppose if they brought along some marines....

At what point will aircraft carriers become functionally obsolete and serve only as an arm flexing exhibit?

The rest of the world tried this. But now whos building carriers? Yep the UK, France and three to four other countries. Countries thought the aircraft carrier wasnt worthwhile in the 60s and 70s, but now they realise what the US have been able to do with them.

And the supercarriers that the UK/French are building are still a good bit smaller than the Nimitz class.

Wow, what a scary thought! I'd rather not see a live-action version of Speed 2, thanks 🙂

How many carriers are needed in today's world?
Seems like we have 12 active and 2 under construction:

The 2 under constructions are replacements, the carrier fleet is not expanding. Actually if ship building does not dramatically increase, the navy is going to shrinking very fast over the next 10 -20 years.

12 is a decent number, maybe a little low. At any given time about 6 are in for repairs and the other 6 are on tour.

Four of which I believe are currently stationed in/near the P.G. region.

Back in Dubya, Dubya II we had dozens of carriers operating, truly massive numbers. Of course we most definitely needed every single one of them right up to '45.

actually its a lot more efficient to move the planes by sea than having them fly to a spot around the world, not to mention the time from take off to on target.

General Dynamics does not make carriers, only submarines and destroyers. A carrier is extremely complex, its huge. Plus there are tons of safety considerations, plenty of testing to do. Building a submarine takes like 6 years, I would expect a carrier to take that and a bit more, so 8 years sounds about right.

Interesting, It was my understanding the new tech was going to be phased into the first 2 of the CVNXs. But I also read Rumsfeld was telling the Navy they needed to skip on of those implentation phases.

Latest defense budget allowed the Navy to continue with their plans to build the next generation carrier, but they had to basically incorporate the technology they intended for the second CVNX ship into the first one. We'll see if it actually works since they have to push up the development faster than they expected.

On carrier ops, it's certainly to easy to understand why they are so useful and why other countries covet our ability to project power with a CVBG. You can throw some amphibious ships in there, protected by the battlegroup, and you have a decent size military with air support, naval gunfire support, infantry and armor all wrapped in steel containers deployed off of a problem country's coast.

However, given the fact that you have to cram everything into limited space, the Navy and Marine Corps will never replace the Army and the Air Force (nor the other way around, it should go without saying). Navy planes will always be a a little limited and a little worse in performance because they have to withstand the rigors of carrier landings and the confines of below decks hangars. Marines will never carry the same equipment as the Army because they simply don't have the room to haul that kind of firepower around all the time nor the means to quickly move it.

One foreseeable threat to Navy power projection in a small way? Space based attack platforms. If we can park a satellite over someone's country and rain down precision strike weapons, we can replicate the effect of cruise missiles and replace the role of Tomahawks fired by the Navy. As usual though, cost would be the limiting factor considering that anything outside the atmosphere is insanely expensive.

Carriers aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

Directed energy weapons? 😎
😀

😀 GIMME LASERS 😀

Exactly what I was trying to say, only much better said.

The CVNX is not a stealth ship. IT will be a much more automated vessell, reguiring less sailors to operate.
From Northrop Grumman(the designer and builder):

CVNX is the new class of aircraft carriers.
A new nuclear propulsion plant will power the next class of aircraft carriers. The new plant will require fewer operators thereby lowering life-cycle costs, and will provide increased electrical power that will be available for technology insertion.
A redesigned propulsion plant will afford a more efficient and powerful electrical distribution system that will support the replacement of high maintenance cost steam systems with electrical auxiliaries.
Smart sensors will assist in further reducing Navy watch standing requirements and in automating damage control functions such as detecting fire and flooding situations.
Flight deck redesign and a transition to an advanced aircraft recovery system (AARS) will reduce crew workload, enhance safety and reduce the costs of operating and maintaining a carrier throughout its 50-year life.

lol, just enough power for all the crew to play cs on their laptops🙂

i'm waiting for a ucav carrier. then we'd be like the protoss😉

If it takes 7 or 8 years to build the carriers now, I would guess that is due to work leveling and scheduling considerations. I'm pretty sure they could be built in four years or less if necessary. I worked on the Nimitz and Eisenhower in the 70's and, although it all pretty fuzzy now, I think the construction was more like 5 years.

Who makes it ? Where is it finally assembled ? Hull assembly is done at GD facilities in VA as far as I know.

If Bill Gates wanted a AC to himself, could he order one from ?

Can an indivudual buy a Destrpyer or Carrier ?

They just showed video of the announcement on CNN. If they did this for daddy, maybe they'll name a 1 year service leave for his son.

War stressing you out? Just take a "Dubbya." 😀
