Hey Id swap but mine is a internal hehe (It is hardware tho not winmodem), this whole thing sucks. I bought a v.92 and it worked great. But I wasnt just gonna give USR $80 because of their mistakes so I returned it. I just wanted to test it out anyways.

Well it seems USR is going to contiue to pretend there is not a issue here...

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for choosing U.S.Robotics.

Go into Hyper Terminal (Start-Programs-Accessories-Communications-Hyper Terminal) and use the following AT commands. AT <Enter> (to attention the modem and make sure there are no errors) ATZ <Enter> (to make sure the modem has been reset correctly ATX1DT18006245123 <Enter> listen on the line to see if the modem picks up and attempts to dial out. Your modem should dial and connect to a service that will ask you for your username. If this happens the modem is working. If the previous steps have not helped then you will want to do the following: For internal modems, reseat the modem to make sure it is connected correctly. For internal modems, try putting the modem into another PCI slot. The slot that the modem is in may not be working correctly or the connections on it may be bad.

You may also want to see if your isp has a differant phone number just for v.90 connections.

I would like to thank you for the opportunity to assist you. Should you require further assistance with your U.S. Robotics product, please feel free to contact us again.

Again, thank you for choosing U.S.Robotics.

That was about the most useless email Ive seen.... Ive already said it works... I know the modem itself works... but NOT with v.92... they TOTALLY skirted this issue and are blowing it off. There has to be something us USR users can do... this is unacceptable for a company to continue to pretend this problem does not exsist! Here was my reply....

The modem is working, and I did what you asked just to check. Yes I can use a v.90 dialup point but all them are older dialup #s with a lot of users and are slow. Other v.90 modems don?t have this problem... but yet just in that thread I linked there are atleast 5 people using USR modems with the same problem... the connection just sits there after a bit. There is obviously a issue.... but all of us keep getting responses that are basically telling us tough luck... try a different #. To me that's not acceptable. Obviously there is a issue with USR products in this respect. I don't mean to be rude or anything, but when you buy a product and it doesn't work because of some issue that the company keeps kinda just brushing off it gives customers a bad impression of that company. Until now I have always used and recommended USR products.

Well I'm sure you'll get the
Thank you for your feedback....
Return e-mail ;)

Thats what I got when I was answered with something that was obviously not to do with the problem I was experiencing and I responded with a kneejerk ;)

Right now I am trying a new dial up number - I've been connected for 39mins so far. However, I have already been disconnected/stagnated from this number this evening.

I was on my original "troublefree for V.90" number and was disconnected repeatedly :(

I have a feeling that the problem is something to do with the "modem on hold" feature of the V.92 standard.
Now, even although we can "disable" that function with the +PMH=1 command - it does not actually disable it in my estimation.
(I'm basically looking at the on hold nature (stagnation) of the connection and assuming that there is a possibility that it is the root cause - I might be totally wrong with this logic though)

Why the same modem using V.90 standards and the very same modem driver was troublefree and the V.92 is not is not convincing. The USR V.92 standard is most likely the culprit as I see it.

Here's hoping they can resolve this :)

Well I took the plunge and flashed the modem back to V.90 standard using the Russian software and flash file.

The flash program works very well indeed and is clearly laid out.
According to the Flasher the routine was successful.

Re-booted the pc and re-installed the driver for the modem - as you can see it certainly works :)

Now whether or not this ""re-flash" will keep me properly connected rmains to be seen. I'm intending to leave my PC running all night to see what happens.

I'll report back in the morning.

p.s. It is pretty sad that a large US company cannot produce a program to re-flash their modem with their old flash file - but some Russian dude can make his own flashing program and his own flash file. The mind boggles ;)

All I can say is, thank you comrade! :)

Well it certainly appears that the V.90 "downgrade" has been successful. I loaded up a few large Kazaa downloads and they were successful. I have put two Ali - g videos in for download (80MB) to see if they are complete when I get home.
So far it would appear that all is back to normal though - download rates of 5.5 to 6.X on average last night.

Here is my last e-mail to USR
Dear Sirs,
The upgrade to V.92 of the Sportster modem in my case was a complete disaster.

The changing of the commands +PIG=1 +PMH=1 +PQC=3 make absolutely no difference at all unfortunately.

The problem of the upgrade to V.92 would in fact appear to be a fairly common problem with USR modems.

I have now re-flashed my modem back to the V.90 standard and it is now working perfectly again.

Please make a note for your knowledge base that the Sportster modem can be reflashed to V.90 AND it will work properly after doing so.
(This was using 3rd party software and flash files though)

There ARE definite issues with the upgrade to the V.92 standard - this should be made known on your V.92 upgrade webpage. In short it was the worst "upgrade" I ever made.

My ISP supports V.90 & V.92, however, it will not work consistently with the USR V.92 upgrade.

Regards
Gavin Davidson

I spoke with a friend of mine last night and she mentioned that she had the same problem with her modem in a Gateway system - asked her to check what the modem was - yep - it was a V.92. Perhaps that is just a coincidence though.
