I have a hardware usr/3com pci modem that only works after I uninstall it then reinstall it. works fine after that...until I restart. modem properties\diagnostics says the port is already open when I click for more info. I've reloaded windows 56 1/2 times in the last 3 days. all different ways (loaded it with the modem in, with the modem out, slots 1,2,3,4,5, b4 motherboard drivers, after m/b drivers, before and after display drivers, b4 soundcard, after soundcard.) It's really starting to irritate me. looked at msinfo32. only thing sharing irq with it is nForce pci system management. guess I'll try to force it to use irq 12. oh, and it works in my older k6 300 machine just great. maybe it's the nForce m/b at fault. who knows. anybody who has any idea what I'm talking about IM me or email. Please.

my system:

asus a7n266-c (march, '02 bios)
seagate 60gb 7200rpm, seagate 3gb udma2
geforce3 oem (most current drivers)
onboard sound (disabled right now)
300w L&C psu
...and the beloved usr 56k pci oem 2977 w/o voice hardware modem

might it be time for win2000pro or xp??

Ok I can only speek from my own personell experience.
Try to put modem in the last slot, then go int cmos setup, disable com 2 and then redo system with video and modem only.

After that install all of your drivers, "IE" if it is a VIA board then install VIA 4 in 1 then USB filter for VIA then USB filter from Microsoft then Direct X ? and finally your Video card reboot and see if you can install modem.
