I just ordered something from the states, how long does it normally take for tracking to start working? Been a few days and it's not even recognizing my tracking number. It's USPS priority so I'm hoping I get it at least next week some time. But it might get held up at the border and all that.

USPS tracking is the worst of them all, it's not real time and only updates when it feels like it.

Good to know, so it's normal that it still does not know the code 2-3 days later? At least I can stop worrying my package got lost in the warehouse or something lol.

seems I get all my updates after the package is delivered. USPS does seem to have the fastest standard shipping.

Yeah, I've definitely had that happen before :)

USPS Doesn't provide tracking unless it is overnight.

This. Odds are the OP is talking about a package with Delivery Confirmation.

Delivery confirmation tracking numbers are sent out to the buyer when the seller generates the label at the post office's website, IIRC. Doesn't mean the package is in the postal system yet, just the tracking number assigned. I've actually had 2 or 3 days go by before I've seen the tracking change to show the package was picked up.

That being said, it usually doesn't show you diddley until the package is delivered, unless it's coming last class/slow boat method. It's meant more for the shipper to prove the package was actually delivered to the recipient, than for the buyer to track the package on it's way to them. And it doesn't require signature either, unless the package is also insured, for over $60 (I think that's the amount). Under that, it can be insured without USPS requiring anyone to sign for it upon delivery. Sadly, I had a package disappear from my mailbox, about 6 years ago now, that tracked as delivered.......but just meant the mailman had stuck it in my mailbox, and then someone came along and helped themselves to my package. :|

Yep.

Yes but it's 2009. I remember my first internet purchase ever in 1999. It was shipped via UPS. The tracking page looked the exact same. You're telling me in 10 years USPS still can't do what the hell UPS has been doing for years? I know it's delivery confirmation but it's like running DOS 6.1 in this era.

Even FedEx Smart Post (the slowest piece of shit ever) has real tracking.

Did you order it from amazon? I find that their USPS shipping numbers only work on the internal amazon tracking pages and not on the USPS site.

They can, and do, just not on Priority Mail. Insured, Express, and a couple other services can be tracked. Priority Mail pretty much just means that it gets put on the truck before First Class, Bulk, etc. There's also no guarantee on Priority Mail whatsoever, and they won't even begin to trace a lost packge for 35 days I believe. I shipped an engine (small RC heli engine) from my work to a customer, he called four days later, said it hadn't shown yet. I shipped him another one, which he got three days later, thirty days to the day the first engine showed up at his house. We've had mail going to Hong Kong wind up in Switzerland, packages just completely dissappear, and then resurface months later. All this is not the norm though, usually two or three days later the package makes it anywhere in CONUS. All a Delivery Confirmation means is that it was delivered, doesn't even mean it was delivered to the right house, just that the postman took it somehwere, dropped it off, and scanned the tag.

A delivery confirmation number is in no way a tracking number. Depending on the stations the package moves through, and whether or not they scan it, and enter it into their system, it MAY be trackable, but that it not the intent of delivery confirmation, and is not the norm.

They lied to you. The only thing Delivery Confirmation actually tracks is whether or not it was delivered. You can get lucky once in a while, and it will hit stations that actually scan them when they arrive, and when they leave, but it is not guaranteed. We deal with this every day here at work. I had a personal package come to my house yesterday, shipping info was received on the 15th, and it didn't update until last night hours after the packge was delivered, and the only info updated was it's arrival at our station, and it's delivery nothing inbetween Cali and here.

Sometimes they use FedEx smart post or DHL or whatever. I didn't learn until later. You gotta check all the carriers' websites, although if its a number it's usually FedEx (if not USPS) now that DHL has stopped in the US?

We all know UPS numbers are like 1Z.....

Yay it updated. Wow this may take a while, it's not even at the border yet. Hopefully the tracking just sucks that bad, maybe it actually made it to Canada already. From there I'm guessing Purolator or Muskoka Delivery Services will take it.

Ohh... I think I missed it earlier that you were in Canada.

Yeah expect "Tracking" to end there and your package to show up randomly some day. I've had nothing but trouble the few times I shipped to Canada. One package disappeared for a month.
