I'm not as much concerned about the extra penny for first class, but what will happen to Priority and the like. I miss the days of $3.85 1lb Priority.

With my 33% UPS Discount, its not much more expensive for me to use UPS Ground for anything over 1lb.

When Priority first came out, I seem to recall the slogan being, "2 Days, 2 Pounds, $2.90." It has been downhill ever since. 🙁

The price difference between priority and ground has all but gone away, it used to be a good deal 🙁

Yep, although Priority is usually faster, with the prices near UPS Ground I would much rather ship my eBay packages via a traceable carrier with free insurance.

fvcking irritating. I have to check rates before I send. I have stamps back to 37 cents now and 4 cent ones to top them up which won't even be enough after this rubbish.

I would be more interested in knowing what Bulk rate as its the bigest cause or close to it for us having to pay higher rates.

Gas prices went from $1/gallon to $3/gallon in several years. They're just passing the savings on to the customers.

This is why I have invested in 50,000 forever stamps.

In about 10 years I will be selling them off at a major discount from current shipping rates at a nice profit for me.

Don't look at it as a 1cent rise, look at it as a nearly 3% price jump.

The problem is you are limiting yourself to a 3-6% bump on average. Still, it beats the amount you can get from a savings account these days and you probably pay less taxes on it too.

WHAT THE FUCK?

USPS needs serious privatization. Look at Deutsche Post! But it interferes with Fedex / UPS/ DHL

Soon or later, USPS will be only good for a letter envelopes that will cost half of a ground package.

Use a competitor then.

USPS isn't that bad. For domestic or international overnight, they are far cheaper than private carriers.

I will. It's costing USPS because they are paying a competitors to transit packages, which is profit...

Great, I don't care how you get letter mail accross the country.

Neither do I.

Just go buy a couple hundred dollars worth o Forever stamps. Not like you'll never use them. Or save them up until postage is $1 and sell them.

By law, postage rates can't increase faster than inflation. So good luck with that investment. 😉

They're digging their own grave.

Less need for them and higher cost are going to at some point cause people to stop using them all together.

Considering that they have a legal monopoly on regular mail service, I'm pretty sure there will be a need for the post office for a long time...

I just get annoyed by how often they raise it by a tiny bit. Just raise it to 50 cents and leave it there for 20 years.

Exactly, it must cause a ton of trouble by constantly raising the rates 1 or 2 cents every few years. Just set the price and let it be stable for awhile.

There are no competitors. It's illegal for anyone but the USPS to deliver to a mailbox.

I'm gonna go ahead and buy a few more books of forever stamps and hope they don't say "Yeah, we know we said you could use these no matter what the rate gets changed to, but, well, we lied, they're worthless now."

Edit: It would be nice if there could be any serious competition for delivery of letters and other small mail, rather than just packages.

The "forever" stamp will make the transitions much easier than in the past. You won't have to bother with 1 cent stamps, just buy forever stamps to use during the transition.

Judging by the book of 37 cent stamps from 2003 that I have sitting on my desk, I don't think I'll be bothering with the forever stamp. 😛 I just use two stamps instead of one.

We have a winner!

Privatize the sucker. Should have been done long ago.

That would be a disaster. The reason it is illegal for anyone other than the USPS to offer regular mail service is because it is imperative that mail service be offered to EVERYONE in the country, no matter how profitable the location is.
