So I just sent a money order to someone for $200 and I wish to cancel the purchase with the person said that they are still going though with our original agreement and cant cancel it. He didnt receive the MO yet so it hasnt been cashed. I went to the post office I purchased it at and they said I cant do anything. So is that it am I screwed or did the post office just not help me?

The PO is correct. You cannot simply walk in and void the MO unless it is in your hands. Otherwise, you're screwed. That MO is as good as cash in the recipient's hands.

A USPS money order is not a check, it is a financial instrument like cash. The difference is it's backed by the USPS instead of the government.

So what would happen if I did a charge back? I take it USPS would fine me/take me to court?

No, you would probably be OK. The USPS is only part of the Federal Government. Everyone knows the Feds hardly ever go after deadbeats ...

You will lose, CC companies don't just refund your money when you make a claim, they investigate. For a successful charge back, you have to show the CC company that you didn't receive your purchase, or it was defective, etc.

You got what you paid for, a money order.

Should have decided you didn't want it before you did the equivalent of mailing them cash!

If you kept the bottom part you could report it stolen and for I believe $15 you'll get your money back. This is perfectly legal.

You bought a money order from the USPS with your credit card. Why would the card company allow you to charge it back?

This. Not even worth your effort, and if for whatever reason you could undo the funds to the USPS, as noted earlier, it would be ugly. It would probably fall under mail fraud and be a very troublesome federal offense. I doubt it is even possible to trigger such an event though - I don't see any banks or creditors allowing any changes based on what occurred. here.

I don't think you can buy a money order with a credit card. every time I've had to get a money order it always had to be cash, no debit or credit card were allowed, tho I usually don't buy one from the post office, it's always been at a store.

And afaik no chargeback protection on debit cards. (maybe I'm wrong, I seem to recall a few years ago you couldn't do it.)
