USPS cracking down on media mail shippers

Is this happening in your area?

I take about 5-6 classes a semester and that generates about 6-10 books I need to sell at the end. The last 7 times I or my fiancée have gone to ship our books the usps clerks have had it out for us or media mail shippers in general. They get upset and tell us there had better not be any correspondence in this package. Or, we are going to open this after you leave. Or, Media Mail is not for sales it is only for library use. Or, this doesn't feel like a book are you sure there isn?t some other item in there.

Shipping dvds is even worse. They, as of late, have given me a complete hassle telling me dvds aren't media. Spending about 10mins getting a manager and having the manager make sure that nothing else is in the package except for dvds and not an invoice or any other paper in the form of a letter.

It never used to be this way, I guess they have a lot of people taking advantage of the discount rate.

Edit:

Media Mail - Basically used when shipping books, dvds, video games, vhs. There is also [Printed Bound Matter] which is usually even cheaper than media but only used for magazines and books.

Ok, YOU have to be one of the dumbest people I have ever seen post on here. Email IS the reason they have to charge so much for postage. If they are to stay in business, which I am guessing you don't have a clue what would happen if they went under, they have to charge what they have to charge. You seem to forget they aren't a for profit company, none of that money from stamps is lining anyone's pockets, in fact it doesn't even cover all the budget, which is why the Federal Gov has to subsidize them as well.

Media mail is terrible. Waiting a dam month for a book is just awful. Its intent was for media to be sent for non profit purposes (library to library, for instance). It was never really made to ship 10 pound books. That is what parcel post is for.

Seriously though, I am just curious. How come almost everything you post is gibberish and indicates how your thought process is clearly lacking reason of any sort whatsoever.

They do not "make money" off of stamps. the stamps pay for the employees paycheck and teh cost of running the post office.

Right but half.com sets pricing on shipping. The price on shipping is quoted at an estimate of media mail. If you were to ship it any other way you will lose a good chunck of what the book is worth.

Usps is going to have to change this policy somehow. Sure its abused, but simply trying to be a pia to customers isn't the solution.

I talked to the manager after I paid and told him to have customers with media mail items to come in without tape on them and then they could look at the item and choose whether or not to put special medial mail labeled tape on the package. He simply told me to fill out a comment card, not too concerned.

Oh don't get me wrong I think Post office employees need an attitude adjustment sometimes, but then again they get treated like a$$ by people like quasarsky and so I give them a little leeway. But I have always found that if you are polite they are polite as well.

usps - united states postal service

gee no wonder they are subsidized lmao. email is not the reason they charge so much for stamps.

they also raised the price for overnight shipping. now, email can't send you a package like weighs a few pounds. they say email caused them to increase the price, yet, how does email compete with sending packages overnight? i know there is the papers you might have to send overnight for a deadline etc. but if you don't plan it out to get whatever you have in a timely manner, then i don't feel sorry for someone paying more than $14 for overnight shipping. postage was $.33 cents prior to 1999. when did email start becoming voluminus enough to eat at usps sales?

I have noticed. I don't get books off of half.com just for the sole reason that everyone wants to ship media mail (plus, the brand new international edition is always cheaper;) even with priority shipping)). I think the issue at hand is that the post office needs to atleast let places like half.com know that mediamail is not for profit purposes. There is some miscommunication somewhere down the line the lets people easily believe media mail is used for general purpose. It seems that half.com is only encouraging the problem even more.

It has teken time for email to eat away at their revenue, but think about it; I know that MIGHT be a stretch considering the comments earlier in this thread, but give it a try. The only way people had to correspond before email was regular USPS mail and the phone. Long distance before VOIP was WAY to expensive for regular use for most people, so guess what they used the good old postal service to get their letters, birthday cards, etc to their loved ones. However, now that you have ecards, email, IM, VOIP, etc. This cuts into the number of people using the postal service GREATLY. That is why some postage, particularly stamps, have gone up. The reason other postage has gone up is because of competition from places like UPS and Fedex who are not Goverment institutions and therefore can pay their employees less and have less benefits etc.
