Good news for Samsung, not so good news for Apple.

This means that Samsung wont need to pay the ~$500 million in "damages" to Apple.

I hope Samsung can then turnaround and sue apple for court fees. many of their patents are just absurd except to people in California juries.

That doesn't even make sense. Apple was granted a patent and they tried to defend it. Samsung should be upset with the USPO for granting it in the first place.

Most of these lawsuits go on for years after the first court decision, simply because there's too much money at stake not to exhaust every legal opportunity.

Kind of funny that after all these years and probably the tens if not hundreds of millions spent by Apple and Samsung, it comes down to something like this.

Reminds me of the episode of BoJack Horseman where Todd wins his legal case because Disney made a typo in their trademark registration.

I imagine Apple will appeal this in some manner and the legal battle will continue on for several more years, probably around the time the legal fees have exceeded the amount of the award and no one even uses smartphones anymore because we've all moved on to the next big thing.

They really do. I'd swear that some of them (especially divorce lawyers) almost try to rile people up so they can make more money.

Most companies have lawyers on retainer, though, so they might as well use them from time to time, though both Apple and Samsung get sued a lot so you pretty much need a team or two on staff just to handle all the non news-worthy cases.

Just remember, this touches on a patent, not trade dress (which was part of what made the Samsung case very different than, say, HTC).

With that said, kinda hoping this will be over. Apple filed all those lawsuits in part because Jobs was irate at seeing Android borrow some of his core concepts... and especially because Samsung was explicitly copying the iPhone between 2010 and 2011. I don't think the lawsuits tarnished Apple's reputation for the broader public, but they didn't really accomplish much besides a couple of not-so-great licensing deals and riling up fanpeople.
