Very interesting read. I've worked officers and SNCOs with similar mentalities and its definitely detrimental to unit effectiveness and cohesion. Glad she's been removed from command, but the question is how she got to that level in the first place. I doubt the IG will do anything to address that though.

The article is filled with a number of her quotes and actions, profanity, abusing junior officers, placing a Master Chief in 'time-out', using underlings to walk her dogs, throwing wadded up paper at other officers, etc.

Edit - Corrected title typo.

Scary to think she was in line for an admirals position after this stint.

I believe the thread topic title is in error - they literally are referring to Captain William Bligh of the HMS Bounty, not to a blight.

People that recommended her for promotions were following the guidelines that female officers from the USNA should be moved up.

She was trained that she could get away with anything.

She deserves what has happened - the question is will the Navy to a self examination on how this situation was allowed to get this far.

Previous COs of hers need to answer for their evals.

According to Wiki, Captain Bligh was not the sadist that popular culture makes him out to be.

Some portrayals are kinder than others. I'd chalk the mutiny mostly up to the the shitty life most British sailors had to live compared with what they experienced on Tahiti and the fact that the Bounty had no Marines aboard.

From a comment posted about the article:

"It's a good thing for her she was in TODAY'S Navy. 40 some odd years ago, when I was in, She'd have been float-tested in mid-Pacific as an Enswine before she ever got to command-at-sea rank. That actually happened aboard USS Blue Ridge in 73 or 74 as I recall. An Ensign who acted like that was thrown over the side off San Diego. The only thing that saved his life was that he was rescued by the Soviet AGI intelligence trawler following the Blue Ridge. In that case, they never DID find the ones who float-tested him."

Well did they get the breadfruit or not?

Most of the things she was accused of were pretty tame IMHO, yelling and cursing at people? It's the Navy FFS.

Throwing porcelain coffee cups is definitely over the line however.

If you read "The Failure Factory" by Bill Gertz you learn about the "Clinton Generals" and other military appointees that were picked to make culture war goals job #1. Feminizing and homosexuality the military is more important to them than killing bad guys and breaking things.

It was also known Janis Karpinski wasn't running Abu Ghraib correctly but she had that PC force field going on for her.

Also check out the Naval Academy prof saying how the PC compulsion over "diversity" is pulling the school down:

"First of all, we're dumbing down the Naval Academy," Fleming said in an interview. "Second of all, we're dumbing down the officer corps."

I was in the Navy and saw first hand what happens to a crew's morale when the CO is an asshole.

No PC full speed ahead. Lawyers are sattled up and commanders don't want their careers fucked up on discrimination charges and the Navy as a whole doesn't want Tail-hook dredged up.

Yelling and cursing at people in front of their subordinates is really awful leadership.

Placing a master chief in 'time out'?

How stupid can you be? The majority of your crew is enlisted people who look up to a master chief far more than any officer.

You lose the respect of your chiefs and you will lose the respect of the rest of your crew.

I came to post the same thing. This was the worst thing she did, IMO. The cursing wouldn't have made me bat an eye when I was in (although I never saw it from senior officers). Throwing things seems a bit over the top, but some people are a-holes and you just have to deal with it. But the lack of judgement that resulted in her thinking it was a good idea to belittle the senior enlisted in front of everyone is reason enough to strip her of command.

Thank god for the dog walking and piano playing that gave them extra ammo to get rid of her.
