For awhile, i've been setting up parts to build a home server for off-site backup. however, i was looking to save a little money by getting a copy of Windows Server 2008 through an academic program rather than getting Windows Home server.

How can I set up Windows Server 2008 to perform the same tasks as Windows Home Server? The box itself is being set up to learn how to work with server environments, but the large purpose for it is automated off site backup. Any ideas?

The backup portions of WHS are specific to that product I believe. Most Server users are going to have a more enterprise-oriented backup product that they purchase separately.

google shows plenty of people doing it. though using hyperV or virtualbox or vmware?

I've never tried HyperV, but with them both being Microsoft platforms it might be worth looking into. VMware's great too, but i don't think they have a free license.

VMWare Player is free, but features are limited (no snapshots/other stuff)

I myself use VirtualBox; its mature enough to work properly. Haven't touched HyperV since I dont have a spare PC to try it
