Using VGA output on laptop

So I figured out I could use the VGA output on my laptop to hook up my LCD monitor. I am using Windows XP. If I make the LCD the "main" monitor (so the taskbar is over there), what happens when I am not at home? Will my laptop still work as normal? Thank you in advance.

I'm assuming you're asking about if you disconnect your external monitor and take it with you? If so, it'll work just fine.

All you do is go into the Display CP -> Settings, select display #2, and uncheck 'Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor.' It'll put your taskbar back on your laptop screen and set it back as the main monitor. Then, whenever you want to hook up your other monitor again, you'll have to go back in and set it up as you did the first time.

I'm asking if I disconnect my external monitor and ONLY take my laptop (i.e. leave my external monitor behind). Will I have to revert the settings before I take my laptop somewhere else?

After the intial setup, my Dell senses when I have an external monitor plugged into it, and adjusts the main display to be either the internal (laptop) or external (desktop) LCD automatically.
