Using Ti4200 without a fan?

My Ti4200's fan is producing a lot (and do mean a LOT) of noise. Tried compressed air, oil, whatever- it's a lost case.

Would it be o.k to run the card without the fan? My case is quite cool- around 35-37 degrees.

Thanks,

I'm fairly certain that the company wouldn't have put a fan on the heatsink if it didn't need one.

You'd need a better heatsink if you wanted to run it without the fan. I have a 4800SE (4400, 8x AGP) in another computer and the fan died on it once, while I was playing CS:S. Something started to smell like it was burning, and I couldn't figure out what. Opened the case up and found it wasn't moving anymore. Card still works fine today, and still plays games ect, but I replaced the HSF.

I was being serious. It seemed sort of self-evident and I tried to portray it in such a way that you would see it, too.

Well, I figured that much on my own- don't let my good looks fool you, I'm not that stupid... :p
Nevertheless, was just wondering if someone has experience using these cards without the fan; My system isn't OC, is well ventilated and the Ti4200 doesn't run extremely hot- so perhaps it's manageable.

Maybe as long as you only use it as a 2D card.

You can buy a passively-cooled AGP nv 6200 for about $30 at newegg, it would be a decent replacement for light 3D.

why not just replace the fan, there are plenty of aftermarket fans out there that will replace the old, some of which may even cool better with less noise..

<<Figures, someone would make the same comment while I was still typing my resonse.>>

Get one of those old passive heatsinks for that generation. If it worked for my old 9700pro (and that thing is still running 24/7), why shouldnt it work for a GF4? Dont ask me which one fits on a 4200 though..

my Ti4200 used to run pretty hot even with heatsink and fans... I don't think its a good idea to remove it..

I put a passive Coolermaster heatpipe heatsink onto my old Ti4200. (Also had noisy fan)

Didn't cost much at all, and now cools in silence.

i took the noisy (at full speed) fan off my pny4200 and screwed a slow 80mm fan onto the top of the hs... it stays cool and is quiet... not pretty, but works ok... i also stuck one of the little ram hs's to the back of the card right above the gpu... there's a space right in the middle of the backside pins...

the chip gets hot, u can't run without a hs...

For sure. The last video card I held in my hands without a heatsink was a V7 Vesa Local Bus one - many, many, many moons ago. ;)

I just upgraded a friend's old AGP ATI 3D Charger (Rage IIc) with a GF2 GTS a few days ago. And the Rage was totally naked (ie - no HS). But that sort of tells you how long its been since heatsinks were optional.
