Using the term "niggardly"

Heh. Once I was at my grandparent's house and they were showing old slides of a family trip through Holland. I asked "where are the dikes," because their earthworks are so famous. Well, my idiot cousins just stared at me with their mouths open because they only knew the slur, and not the word that they should have learned in school. I literally didn't understand why they were looking at me like that & only realized what was going when my 80 year old grandfather in an exasperated tone explained to them what a dike is.

WTF? Who doesn't know the story of the boy who puts his finger in the dike?
