I walk on the sidewalk, but when I'm biking, I'm in the street. If you don't like that, fvck you. I'm not a rude person, but I really mean that. Fvck you. I'm riding about 20 MPH on residential streets, so it's not like you're not moving 2/3rd's of the speed limit while you're waiting for that incredibly frequent opportunity to pass me. I don't feel safe on the sidewalk on my bicycle, because I'm simply going too fast for car drivers too notice me soon enough. I feel safest when I?m seen.

In my neighborhood there are no sidewalks (in a hilly area and lazy city), and lots of people like to walk. On top of that, there are many blind corners which you need to go around very slowly, there's even a guy that carries a golf club and sticks it out so you don't get too close to him!
And bikers, don't get me started on bikers, especially the ones that drive on the wrong side of the road!

I know many people will say this is wrong, but I almost always ride my bike and run on the wrong side of the road. I like to see what is coming at me at insane speeds. Having cars suddenly pass me and not seeing them until they do is unnerving.

I see where you're coming from, but in the event you get nailed by a car on your bike (for whatever reason), you won't have the law on your side since you were going the wrong way. Plus people coming out of sidestreets aren't going to be looking for a bike coming from that direction on that side of the road. Just FYI.

One other note along these lines: statistically speaking, only about 5% of car/bike accidents are where the car hits the cyclist from behind. Much more likely for them to pass you and then cut you off by turning right, or to turn left in front of you coming from the other direction. I agree that it is indeed unnerving to have cars coming up on you that you can't see, but maybe you could get one of those tiny rear-view mirrors that clip to your helmet or handlebars. I know several people who have this kind of setup and love it.

Yeah, I know. I'm just getting to be a big freakin' pussy in my old age. I remember as a kid riding my bike in and out of heavy LA traffic all day long and never being afraid of anything. Now just riding around a small town neighborhood is cause for concern. :(

Yeah, this frequently happens where I live too. There are ample sidewalks and paths for people to go running on, yet some of them choose to run on the street toward oncoming traffic:disgust:.In fact, almost every night when Im driving home I see the same idiots running out on the street forcing traffic to go around them:|

You need to be a runner to understand. Many sidewalks and trails are like an obstacle course and an accident waiting to happen for runners. Either the sidewalk is extremely uneven, or people have their yard waste all over it, or worse, it's over grown.

heh I actually do go running MWF and that is not the case here. The sidewalks are just fine to run on, and there is enough space to go around other runners/walkers. I understand that sometimes you are forced to run on the street, which is fine by me, but these people choose to run on the street and force traffic around them rather than using the sidewalks and paths.

Here the sidewalks are buckled in most places (results of bad winters, I guess) and many don't continue past a certain point. I never run out in the middle of the street, and like I said, I give cars the right of way.

running on the street is easier on your body than running on the sidewalk.

You know, I've heard this before too. However, as pointed out in Runners World, there is no evidence that running on asphalt is any better for you than running on concrete.

The ones the really irk me are those who set up basketball hoops on the curb so that their kids can play ball in the street. Especially on a relatively busy residential street...and especially when they don't feel the least bit obligated to stop their game when cars are coming.

By chance do you have a link to that? I can't find much either way but the theory makes sense, at least.

Your link is very unscientific. Your body hardly has the tensile strength of a hardened steel hammer. Try this, throw a hampster as hard as you can at asphalt, and at concrete, and tell me if the results change.

I don't have a link, as I read it in a hard copy of the magaizine while drying off at the gym. (I gotta stop wearing cotton when I run on the treadmill) But what they said was that your body can't notice the difference, and that the rate of injury is no different. I'll do some searches, and if I run across it online, I'll post it here, OK?

wow
some of you are far too anal

anyway, im sorry i complained about people just f*cking standing in the middle of the road
i now realize its totally acceptable, and, maybe if enough of us do it, it will also be acceptable to just leave our cars in the middle of the freeway when we decide its nice and we'd fancy a bit of a stroll among the falling leaves and slight rolling winds of this glroius autumn

because, you know, anyone who complains about that sort of thing is just whining as well, anyone should be able to stroll down a freeway, just as well as a city street, right smack down in the middle of it

and im sorry i wasnt clear, but they ride their bikes IN the street

not DOWN the street, in an attempt to reach a destination

but they just ride circles in the middle of the street.....the busy street, not just the almost-never-used streets, but the busy ones, how this is acceptable is beyond me, and it certainly isnt safe. they could easily not pay attention and ride ride across the street, get hit by a car (yes, a moving car, though i wouldnt put it past a few individuals to run into stationary ones) and then blame....the driver

anyway, im sick as hell with some kind of evil cold, so my mood these last couple of days hasnt been my normal mood, in which i usually keep quiet

i think its the alcohol laced cough syrup, forgive me
