Using ssd as virtual memory on older pc?

While my main system is down for repairs,i have a xps400 tower with a pentium 4 and 768mb in major need of memory.

Have two hard drives in this tower, one is a mechanical with xp and one is a 180gb ssd with windows 7 ultimate 64bit and currently notice using the drive with windows 7 honestly feels so much better sometimes even if 180mb or so free memory is available as where with the xp drive,it felt faster in some stuff due to having at times a good 500mb free.

I am considering perhaps either installing xp on my ssd for the sake of xp using so little memory,or if possible format my ssd and set it up as a secondary drive just for the purpose of being used for virtual memory.

Which would be the better route?Usage for the tower is older games and i found a few eat into the pagefile while loading, the ssd does dramatically cut down on loading and rendering but the main question is the os of choice with so little physical memory?

You can have your cake and eat it too. Put xp on ssd. The pagefile will end up there. If you want you can even partition a space for swap.

It'll work fine. Definitely partition it in 7, though, so it's aligned before XP can touch it.

I did give it a shot using xp on the mechanical and using the ssd for the virtual memory and it actually did pretty well.

Family member just gave me a 2gb stick of ram so my pagefile worries are over.:p

Weird but both cpu-z and my motherboard bios claim my memory is still in dual channel despite the fact there is 3 sticks of ram coming out to 2.75gb....is that even possible?:awe:

It could be operating in Flex Mode where part of your ram runs in dual and part in single.

Silly that i never heard of it,but hell this is the first time i have used a low end rig since like 2007 and even then i had matching sticks of kingston memory on my asus p4c800-e deluxe motherboard and every other motherboard and build since then.

Thanks for that link.
