so i'm at my sons piano teachers neighborhood. he's doing he's piano thing and i'm in the car surfing on someone elses wap.

i guess most people don't use wep.

anyway, i'm just borrowing it, not really stealing as i'm not taking anything that's not renewable. 🙂

wonder what the legality of this is?
 
You're stealing his bandwidth. That's illegal.
You're using his network without authorization. Not only is that illegal, it's cyberterrorism!!!

i'm PART of his WLAN, but i'm not USING his WLAN, i'm only using the INTERNET access, hence the WAP.

WLAN would imply that i'm using OTHER LAN resources, filesharing and such, which i'm not.

I use my PDA to surf the net and get e-mail on my girlfriend's couch using a neighbors WAP... 😀

As soon as you get an IP that is when it becomes illegal.
 
Erm that's questionable. A lot of places set up public wireless access points.
I think it's only really illegal when you try to circumvent security such as wep.

I am the IT guy for a decent sized lawyer firm in Utah and I have asked this question several times. The lawyer who specializes in computer cases told me when you grab an IP that is when it becomes illegal unless specified otherwise such as a Starbucks, internet cafe, etc.
 
do you see any "warchalking" around?

I have seen many articles about people setting up free wi-fi networks to spite places like starbucks.

You = suck for stealing someone's else's connection. Someone around me keeps cracking my 64-bit wep and is leaching off my access. I finally had to put wep at 128 bit again and the access stopped. I think it is either my next door neighbor or some kids across the street. Fscking idiots!
 
Lol, in my neighborhood there are a bunch of people with wireless networks. We were setting one up at my home and it detected like 4 or 5. It was kind of funny bercause I wanted to find the network, look for a printer, and print a ton of things, hehe. I could do it at night and they wouldn't know till the morning. Hehe. Anyway, its kinda lame that they don't use any encryption code or anything and just leave it wide open....

how is what i did at ALL similar to someone cracking your wep?


i just turned on my laptop and it got an ip address. SSID broadcasting was not turned off, NO WEP and DHCP was on.

so, me turning my laptop was the illegal action?

 
Yeah log off, if possible try to notify the owner of his vulnerability. Also ona side note, the world wide war drive is coming up www.worldwidewardrive.com this weekend. Remember, the point of the war drive isn't to gain unauthorized access, but to promote knowledge about wireless security.
 
Illegal? Maybe, I don't think the law has caught up to this issue really.

I don't really feel bad doing this one the few times I have. For a while anyone could access my WAP.
