Using Remote Desktop w/Vista

I'm not at all familiar with remote desktop other than one time I saw a professor access his home computer from class to pull up our lecture. I was wondering how it works and if I can use it with Vista. At home I'm running Vista home basic x64 and on my laptop I'm running x86. The main thing I wanted to use it for was to check the progress of downloads and BOINC. I don't even know if this is possible.

The remote computer (the one you connect to) must be running XP Pro, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. x64 or x86 makes no difference. The computer you connect from (the one you view it from) can be any OS with a RDP client. (aka any version of XP or Vista).

...or linux or OSX. There are RDP clients for all of them.

As noted, Vista Home Basic doesn't include the Remote Desktop server software. Try LogMeIn or other third-party remote access software.

That's a bummer. I didn't get the business edition because I figured I wouldn't need any of those features. Can you guys recommend any good third-party programs I should look into? Thanks for the help.
