Using remote connection with winxp

I have two XP machines on the same home network, and I'm trying to use the remote control feature of winxp to control one with the other.

I have the remote desktop connection program on both systems, but I'm unable to successfully connect. It tells me there are no terminal services currently being run on the network.

Has anyone been able to do this successfully? Microsoft's website made it sound like once you had the client installed, it would work. (I set the host machine to allow remote control in control panel->system->remote)

Any advice? Thanks ahead.

Did you just check off Remote Assistance or also Remote Desktop? In order to use Remote assistance you need to send an invitation to someone via e-mail or Windows Messenger. To use Remote Desktop you must select which users can use it and they MUST have passwords. WinXP will not allow them to connect if they have no passwords.

Where does it say remote desktop? I went to control panel->system->remote and checked remote assistance, then clicked the advance button and checked the "Allow this computer to be controlled remotely" box. I don't see anything that says remote desktop though. I'm using the Home version of XP. Is it only available on Pro?

make sure you dont have XP's firewall running, it'll block the request for terminal services... All you have to do is check the box to allow it, and it'll work... My company uses it for many clients to help them remotely on their desktops...

Right click on 'My Computer', select 'Remote' You should have two choices 'Remote Assistance' and 'Remote Desktop'. If 'Remote Desktop' isn't there your probably on XP home which doesn't include it.

Remote desktop isn't there. I'm using XP Home. Am I out of options? Is it possible to install it seperately?

Also, where do I disable the XP firewall?

Sorry, you need XP Pro for remote desktop :( Might be worth the upgrade, it is pretty cool (I use my upstairs laptop now as just a dummy box to access the real systems)

XP Pro has these advantages over Home:

1) EFS (Encrypting File System)
2) Remote Desktop
3) Multi-processor support
4) Domain support
5) Multiple language support
6) IIS only comes in the Pro version
7) the ability to disable Simple File Sharing and put real security options in place

Yeah, unfortunately I don't want to spend the $200 to upgrade though:-(

Has anyone used VNC for remote connections? I'd use it instead, but when I type, there's about a 10 second delay before I see characters popping up.

I was just about to recommend VNC as an alternative, generally when there is a delay like that it indicates that you have a signifigant amount of network latency between your 2 boxes (remember you typing has to go first to the VNC server and than the updated screen has to go back to the client).

try pinging the box and see what kind of ping times you get (ms).

I use VNC for my own in-house network and it works great. I also use it to fix family computers over the net, and it is pretty slow doing that :)

Ping is low... 1 ms. VNC has worked great for emails, but for some reason it seems to fail to refresh the screen when I'm typing text into an IM window (I use AOL IMer) or in notepad. Works great when typing in my web browser, like right now:) Anyone know why I might be having problems with notepad and IMer?
