I purchased parts via Newegg for a server my boss commissioned me to build. 3U case, 2 SCSI hard drives were his only real requirements. It will eventually become a webserver and our email server once we migrate over from an ISP solution. I went with the SE7210TP1 Intel "Entry Level" board, since it includes support for prescott, dual channel DDR400, and 800MHZ FSB, it also includes a Ultra320 controller.
I figured that I better go with registered / ECC PC3200 (DDR400), since there is a very good likelihood that this machine will become the backbone of our mail system, and maybe even some database stuff. The board specs state it supports ECC/Registered PC3200. I went with 2 x 1GB modules of PQI Registered / ECC PC3200from Newegg. When everything came, it all seemed good except the darn thing would only beep 3 times. POST ERROR cannot find first 64KB RAM. Great..... We had some 512MB PC2700 unregistered/unbuffered NON-ECC RAM laying around, I stuck it in and it works great.
Anyone have a similar issue with this board, or this RAM?
I put the RAM in this Dell workstation, got similar beeps.
I took it home, on my GF's machine, which should definitely support ECC / Registered DDR, it doesn't boot. When a 256MB chip of PC2100 is put in slot one, the system boots, but only recognizes that one 256MB chip. (max module support should be 1GB on her MB.) Registered RAM support is unknown. She has a cheap Asrock M266.
It works perfectly fine in my computer, Abit KG7-RAID, all 2GB of it. Well at least it boots up. I fail memtest with the quickness/horribleness, changing Timings to a MUCH slower (2.5,4,4,12 2CMD) doesn't change anything. Similar results with just one stick. I put my RAM back in it works great, no errors.
Could both these sticks be bad? Just curious, I already RMA'd it.
Has anybody had more experience with Registered/ECC RAM that could shed some light here?
