using portable AC unit

I was thinking about using my garage for the guys game playing night, but my garage for obvious reasons does not have AC. Anyone have experience with the portable AC units? They've gotten fairly cheap, but can they cool a couple hundred square feet room, albeit one with a high ceiling and minimal insulation. I'm not talking a freeze box, just enough to make it comfortable for 6 or so hours.

I was thinking about getting one recently also. I was told that they don't work worth a sh*t and so I decided against buying one. The person who gave me their opinion returned their unit for refund. They were using it to cool a room in a house though - a garage might be different, especially if its just for a card game.

its like a spot cooler.. i have one rated 9000btu.. its good enough.. my room is pretty big, a 18000 btu couldn't coole the other side in the 100 heat, i use the portable one to supplement it..

you do need to empty out the water once a while..

I've got one as well, 13,000 btu from home depot. It does a good job in our master bedroom. I'm not sure about your garage though, may need to seal it up as best you can to keep the cool ait from escaping to quickly.

My parents have one that they bought at Costco. It works great. I believe it's 9000btu. And the one they got doesn't need to have the water emptied.

Using a Haier unit in our bedroom right now since our central AC took a crap and it won't be repaired until next week. It works great.

We had two for our basement a while back. They worked fine. Can't remember the size of them though. If you do get one put some towels or something along the bottom of the garage door to help keep the cool air in.
