Using Partition Magic to Create Win98 partition

Hello, I am currently running Win2K.

I have a 40G drive and I want to create a Windows 98 partition.

currently I have ~35G to Windows 2000 and ~5G to backup/scratch/linux dabbling/etc.

well, I want to install win98.

from what I gather, I cannot have any larger than 2G partitions for Win98? is this correct? If so, I want to create 3 2G partitions for Win98 and Create a Dual boot system.

Using Partition Magic.

Also, I'll have to have the boot partitions both starting before a certain point, like 1, or 2, or 4 G, right? (I'm not sure which one) Is this the case for both win98 and Win2k both? or just 98? If so, if I want 3 98 partitions, do I have to put the main one at the beginning of the drive, then the 2k partition, then the other 2 98 partitions at the end of the drive?

It seems that I would have to move my Win2k Partiton forward and create the 98 partition at the beginning of the drive.

Is it safe to use PM for such tasks- moving, resizing partitions? Will it mess up my current setup?

any info would be great.

thanks.

No. Win98 partitions can be up to 2 Terabytes in size.

Win98 doesn't like booting from any drive but the first. So it'd be best if you put the FAT32 drive at the front (Note: only the files command.com, io.sys, msdos.sys, autoexec.bat and config.sys need to be in the front partition. Once those are loaded, Windows can be run from anywhere on the drive).

I've used PM 4.0 many times without problems.

Since you're installing Win98 after Win2k, you should read this MS knowledge base article. (Note: this KB article says the partition must be FAT because it assumes both OSes are going on the same partition. With separate partitions, you can still run Win2k on NTFS).
