Using newer RAM in an older Gateway

I have an older Gateway PC that uses DDR333/PC2700 RAM. I am trying to max the RAM out because it is used for a Minecraft server. DDR333 memory is pretty expensive right now -- about $50 for 2 x 1GB. Could I use a faster DDR RAM and will it just run slower?

The question I'm asking is -- can I get newer RAM that is cheaper, but will still work with this Gateway?

As long as it fits, you can use faster RAM. It should not run slower. If you have no control over the memory timings in the BIOS, the timings will be automatically set to whatever timing is specified at DDR333.

I bought PC3200 (DDR400) ram to run in an old P4 using PC2100. No problems. Same with an old DDR laptop.
