Using my OEM drive removed from the laptop elsewhere

I installed a 7200RPM hard drive in my HP laptop and removed the stock 40GB drive. So, I put the stock 40GB in the same enclosure I used to house the new drive for the purpose of copying.

The new 7200RPM drive works in both inside the laptop and inside the enclosure. The stock drive removed from the laptop would not go into "ready" state anywhere but in the laptop it was originally installed in. I went into BIOS and enabled/disabled DriveLock passoword a few times, but it is still locked.

Anyone else experience this and is there anyway to unlock this HDD?

I'm not sure, but why bother?

Put the new drive in the enclosure, and use a disk partition manager (like that found in many "Live" versions of Linux) to image your new disk from your old disk.

because, I want to put the old drive to use as an external drive.

Temporarily put it back in the old host laptop and format it there with UBCD or bootable Partition Magic CD.

It's nothing to do with the partition or formatting. The INTERFACE would not communicate to anything but the host laptop. I can zero the drive fine in the host laptop using using Acronis tool. Put it in anything else and it isn't even recognized.

You should be able to do a complete low level format in the host laptop and make it a cherry drive. BTW - who altered this wierd laptop? HP? I have a HP laptop and it doesn't do that. I use its old drives all over - no problem. BTW - I assume you removed the drive from its caddy and pulled off the 90 degree connector adapter? See illustration:

^ that gives you an idea of the problem I'm having. I did the unlock/lock/unlock/ thing that guy did, but it still won't work. Drive is not secured, not locked in this laptop. Put it in an enclosure it won't work whatsoever.

This has become more of the puzzle solving thing. The cost of a new 80GB 4200RPM is low enough its not worth the hassle to make this thing work, but its the problem solving in me that wants to figure out the secret.

It looks like you maybe SOL if you cant get it unlocked from the original machine. These HD locks are a part of the ATA spec and are difficult to bypass.
